''Libellula needhami'', or Needham's skimmer, is a species of skimmer in the family of dragonflies known as Libellulidae. It is found in the Bahamas, Cuba, Mexico, and the United States. The IUCN conservation status of ''Libellula needhami'' is "LC", least concern, with no immediate threat to the species' existence. The population is stable. The species is named after the American entomologist James George Needham. Description Males have a red face, females have a brown or yellow face. Libellulidae
The skimmers or perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest dragonfly family in the world. It is sometimes considered to contain the Corduliidae as the subfamily Corduliinae and the Macromiidae as the subfamily Macromiinae. Even if these are excluded (as Silsby does), there remains a family of over 1000 species. With nearly worldwide distribution, these are almost certainly the most often seen of all dragonflies. The genus '' Libellula'' is mostly New World, but also has one of the few endangered odonates from Japan: '' Libellula angelina''. Many of the members of this genus are brightly colored or have banded wings. The related genus '' Plathemis'' includes the whitetails. James George Needham
James George Needham (March 16, 1868 in Virginia, Illinois – July 24, 1957) was an American entomologist. After studying with John Henry Comstock at Cornell University (1896–1898) he taught biology at Lake Forest University (1898–1907). In 1908 returned to Cornell as assistant professor of limnology. When Comstock retired in 1914, Needham became head of the Department of Entomology at Cornell until his retirement in 1935. Needham published numerous scientific articles, educational papers, and textbooks but is best known for the Comstock–Needham system for describing insect wing venation.
