Lexicon-grammar
Lexicon-Grammar is a method and a praxis of formalized description of human languages. It was developed by Maurice Gross since the end of the 1960s. Its theoretical basis is Zellig Harris, Zellig S. Harris's distributionalism, and notably the notion of transformational grammar. The notation conventions are meant to be as clear and comprehensible as possible. The method of Lexicon-Grammar is inspired from hard and soft science, hard sciences. It focuses on data collection, hence on real use of language, both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view. Lexicon-grammar also requires formalization. The results of the description must be sufficiently formal to allow an application to parsing, in particular through the realization of syntax analyzers. Maurice Gross (born 21 July 1934 in Sedan, Ardennes department; died 8 December 2001 in Paris) was a French linguistJean-Claude Chevalier,, ''Le Monde'', 12 décembre 2001. and scholar of Romance languages. Beginning in the late 1960s he developed Lexicon-Grammar, a method of formal description of languages with practical applications. Originally a Semiticist, he is best known for his work in structural linguistics and discourse analysis and for the discovery of transformational structure in language. Distributionalism
Distributionalism was a general theory of language and a discovery procedure for establishing elements and structures of language based on observed usage. It can be seen as an elaboration of structuralism but takes a more computational approach. Originally mostly applied to understanding phonological processes and phonotactics, distributional methods were also applied to work on lexical semantics and provide the basis for the distributional hypothesis for meaning. Current computational approaches to learn the semantics of words from text in the form of word embeddings using machine learning are based on distributional theory. Transformational Grammar
In linguistics, transformational grammar (TG) or transformational-generative grammar (TGG) is part of the theory of generative grammar, especially of natural languages. It considers grammar to be a system of rules that generate exactly those combinations of words that form grammatical sentences in a given language and involves the use of defined operations (called transformations) to produce new sentences from existing ones. The method is commonly associated with American linguist Noam Chomsky. Generative algebra was first introduced to general linguistics by the structural linguist Louis Hjelmslev although the method was described before him by Albert Sechehaye in 1908.
