Legend (1958 Play)
''Legend'' is a 1958 Australian play by Ric Throssell. Its original production was sponsored by the Elizabethan Theatre Trust. Radio adaptation It was adapted for ABC radio in 1959. The play was the third of Throssel's to be broadcast. Leslie Rees said the production "made a marked impact, mainly because of its pathos and delicacy rather than because of dramatic conflicts or thematic conclusiveness." Premise Sir Neil Argent, ambassador of a British Commonwealth country, is holding a reception in an Eastern European country. His son, lan, is unwillingly present. One of the guests is a minister of foreign affairs from one of the Eastern European countries. He brings with him his daughter Varia. She falls in love with Ian. Ric Throssell
Ric Prichard Throssell (10 May 192220 April 1999) was an Australian diplomat and author whose writings included novels, plays, film and television scripts, and memoirs. For most of his professional life as a diplomat his career was dogged by unproven allegations that he either leaked classified information to his mother, the writer and communist Katharine Susannah Prichard, or was himself a spy for the Soviet Union. Early life and education Ric Prichard Throssell was born on 10 May 1922 in Western Australia, in the Perth suburb of Greenmount. His father was Hugo Throssell, a winner of the Victoria Cross Retrieved 23 April 2020 at Gallipoli in 1915, and son of a former Premier of Western Australia, George Throssell. His mother was the writer Katharine Susannah Prichard. Ric was their only child. The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust (AETT) is an Australian theatre and performing arts company based in Sydney established in 1954. It is today especially known for its music scholarship program. History The Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust was established in September 1954, with the aim of establishing drama, opera and ballet companies nationally. It was founded by H.C. Coombs, governor of the Commonwealth Bank, Sir Charles Moses, general manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission, and John Douglas Pringle of the ''Sydney Morning Herald''. The arts company was so named to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Australia, after the trust raised £100,000 by a public appeal.
