''Lecanactis proximans'' is a species of terricolous (ground-dwelling) crustose lichen in the family Roccellaceae. It has been assessed as Critically Endangered for the IUCN Red List. It is known only from a single location in the (Eastern Hills) of Bogotá, Colombia. Taxonomy The species was first described by William Nylander in 1863 as ''Lecidea proximans''. It was later transferred to the genus '' Lecanactis'' by Alexander Zahlbruckner in 1923. Description ''Lecidea proximans'' is a crustose lichen that grows on soil and is strongly attached to its . It has a powdery to consistency. The apothecia (fruiting bodies) have a thickened margin and greyish . The species grows in shaded areas. Conservation ''Lecidea proximans'' is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List. The species is known from only one location with an estimated area of occupancy of 4 km². Alexander Zahlbruckner (31 May 1860, Svätý Jur – 1938, Vienna) was an Austrian- Hungarian botanist who specialized in the study of lichens. Johann Babtist Zahlbruckner, an earlier Austrian botanist, was his grandfather. From 1878 to 1883 he studied at the University of Vienna, where his instructors included Anton Kerner von Marilaun and Julius Wiesner. Afterwards, he served as a voluntary assistant to Günther Beck von Mannagetta und Lerchenau at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, where he later attained the titles of assistant curator (from 1897), curator (from 1899) and head curator (from 1912). ''Lecanactis'' is a genus of crustose lichens, commonly called old wood lichens. The mycobiont (fungus partner) is in the family Roccellaceae. The photobiont is an algae in the genus '' Trentepohlia''. These lichens typically grow as thin crusts on tree bark or rocks, producing small black fruiting bodies that may appear as round discs or elongated slits. The genus contains about 20 species found worldwide, with some species considered rare and threatened by habitat loss. Taxonomy The genus was circumscribed in 1855 by the German lichenologist Gustav Wilhelm Körber, who assigned '' Lecanactis abietina'' as the type species. William Nylander (botanist)
William (Wilhem) Nylander (3 January 1822 – 29 March 1899) was a Finnish botanist and entomologist. Nylander was born in Oulu, and taught at the University of Helsinki before moving to Paris, France, where he lived until his death in 1899. Nylander studied medicine, receiving a degree in 1847. Nylander pioneered the technique of determining the taxonomy of lichens by the use of chemical reagents, such as potassium hydroxide, tinctures of iodine and calcium hypochlorite, still used by lichenologists as the K and C tests. Nylander was the first to realise the effect of atmospheric pollution on the growth of lichens, an important discovery that paved the way for the use of lichens to detect pollution and determine the cleanness of air.
