Tokamak à Configuration Variable
The tokamak à configuration variable (TCV, literally "variable configuration tokamak") is an experimental tokamak located at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) in Lausanne, Switzerland. As the largest experimental facility of the Swiss Plasma Center, the TCV tokamak explores the physics of magnetic confinement fusion. It distinguishes itself from other tokamaks with its specialized plasma shaping capability, which can produce diverse plasma shapes without requiring hardware modifications. The research carried out on TCV contributes to the physics understanding for ITER and future fusion power plants such as DEMO. It is currently part of EUROfusion's Medium-Sized Tokamak (MST) programme, alongside ASDEX Upgrade, MAST Upgrade and WEST. The TCV tokamak produced its first plasma in November 1992 with full tokamak operation starting in June 1993. Characteristics Plasma shaping TCV features a highly elongated, rectangular vacuum ...

History The ISREC has its origins in the history of the (CACR), which was founded in 1924 in Lausanne. Initially, the CACR was composed of three main departments: pathology, experimental research and a therapeutic service. The appointment of Alfredo Vannotti (1907–2002) as Head of the experimental research service in 1947 and the appointment one year later of Serge Neukomm (born 1917), led to the developmen ...

Whole Genome Sequencing
Whole genome sequencing (WGS), also known as full genome sequencing or just genome sequencing, is the process of determining the entirety of the DNA sequence of an organism's genome at a single time. This entails sequencing all of an organism's chromosomal DNA as well as DNA contained in the mitochondrial DNA, mitochondria and, for plants, in the chloroplast. Whole genome sequencing has largely been used as a research tool, but was being introduced to clinics in 2014. In the future of personalized medicine, whole genome sequence data may be an important tool to guide therapeutic intervention. The tool of DNA sequencing, gene sequencing at Single-nucleotide polymorphism, SNP level is also used to pinpoint functional variants from association studies and improve the knowledge available to researchers interested in evolutionary biology, and hence may lay the foundation for predicting disease susceptibility and drug response. Whole genome sequencing should not be confused with DNA ...

Napoleon Oak (Lausanne)
The Napoleon Oak in Lausanne is a single, living individual of ''Quercus robur'' in Lausanne, Switzerland known to have been present during Napoleon Bonaparte's march to Italy in 1800. It has recently been subjected to extensive genomic research, one of the few examples of such in a very long-lived organism. It was replanted in 1800 when it was 22 years old in the center of what was the Dorigny estate, traditionally in honor of Napoleon when he stopped there on his way to the conquest of Italy. It now stands as a living historical monument on the Dorigny campus of the University of Lausanne. In 2012, the tree was dated as 234 years old by dendrochronology. The tree, called Chêne de Napoléon in French, is about high with the base of its trunk being about in circumference. Because of its age, it is supported with of cables. In 2017, researchers performed whole-genome sequencing on the tree, and they found that, despite being centuries old, the apical meristem of the lower and ...
