Latvian Diplomatic Service
The Latvian diplomatic service in exile () was the only governmental body of the Latvia, Republic of Latvia which continued its activities during the Nazi and Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940, Soviet occupation of Latvia during 1940–1991. Latvian diplomats who were stationed in embassies and consulates at the moment of the occupation in 1940, refused to recognize the occupation and return to Soviet Latvia. They continued to formally represent the interests of Latvia in countries that did not recognize the Soviet annexation. After the restoration of Latvian independence in 1991, the diplomats started reporting to the restored Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Latvia), Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Coat Of Arms Of Latvia
The Coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia was officially adopted by the Constitutional Assembly of Latvia on 15 June 1921, and entered official use starting on 19 August 1921. It was created using new national symbols, as well as elements of the coats of arms of Polish-Lithuanian and Swedish Livonia and of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. Thus, the coat of arms combines symbols of Latvian national statehood, as well as symbols of its historical regions. The Latvian national coat of arms was designed by Latvian artists Vilhelms Krūmiņš and Rihards Zariņš. Previously, after the proclamation of the independence of Latvia, an emblem was adopted by the People's Council of Latvia on 6 December 1918 as a 'national coat of arms'. Baltic Appeal To The United Nations
The Baltic Appeal (, or ''Baltiešu memorands'', ) was a public letter to the secretary-general of the United Nations, Soviet Union, East and West Germany, and signatories of the Atlantic Charter by 45 Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian citizens. Sent on 23 August 1979, the 40th anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop pact, the appeal demanded public disclosure of the pact and its secret protocols, annulment of the pact ''ab initio'', and restoration of the independence of the Baltic states, then occupied by the Soviet Union. The appeal was published in the foreign press and constituted the basis for the European Parliament's resolution of 13 January 1983 in support of its demands.
