Larry Johannessen
Larry R. Johannessen (1947–2009) was an American educator, academic, and author. Early life and military service Johannessen was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. When he registered for classes in high school, his counselor enrolled him in the vocational curriculum based on his address in the working-class section of his community. Johannessen elected to leave high school before graduating and enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corps, joining the same unit in which his father had served: B (Bravo) Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Johannessen served two tours of duty in Vietnam. As a Marine, he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation with one star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Rifle Marksman Badge (1964–68). The Good Conduct Medal is one of the oldest Awards and decorations of the United States military, military awards of the United States Armed Forces. The U.S. Navy's variant of the Good Conduct Medal was established in 1869, the Marine Corps version in 1896, the Coast Guard version in 1923, the Army version in 1941, and the Air Force version in 1963; the Air Force Good Conduct Medal was temporarily discontinued from February 2006 to February 2009, followed by its subsequent reinstatement. George Hillocks Jr. (June 15, 1934 - November 12, 2014) was an emeritus professor in the Department of Education, with a joint appointment in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. He received in 2011 the James R. Squire Award of the National Council of Teachers of English for having "a transforming influence and akinga lasting intellectual contribution to the profession."
