Larry Holmes vs. Michael Spinks, billed as ''History: A September to Remember'', was a professional boxing match contested on September 21, 1985, for the IBF, ''The Ring'' and ''Lineal'' heavyweight championship. Background By mid 1985, Larry Holmes had made 19th successful defenses of the Heavyweight championship he won against Ken Norton in June 1978, following Leon Spinks' vacating of WBC title in order to have a rematch against Muhammad Ali. He was also one win away from tying Rocky Marciano's record of 49–0. Meanwhile Michael Spinks had successfully unified the Light Heavyweight division and was looking to move up to Heavyweight. Larry Holmes (born November 3, 1949) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1973 to 2002 and was world heavyweight champion from 1978 until 1985. He is often considered to be one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. He grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania, which led to his boxing nickname of "the Easton Assassin". Holmes's left jab is often rated among the best in heavyweight boxing history. James Pritchard (born April 28, 1961, in Louisville, Kentucky) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1985 to 1997. He challenged once for the IBF cruiserweight title in 1991. Amateur Pritchard had a stellar amateur career, becoming the 1985 National Golden Gloves Super Heavyweight Champion. Professional career Pritchard turned pro in 1985 and went undefeated in 17 bouts, including a draw with Mike 'The Bounty' Hunter, before facing ex-world heavyweight champion Mike Weaver in a crossroads fight. Pritchard was stopped by the big punching Weaver on his feet in six, but returned to win three fights in a row before meeting another former world champion, this time Michael Dokes. Alfonso Ratliff (born February 18, 1956) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1980 to 1989, holding the WBC and ''The Ring'' cruiserweight titles in 1985. He was later coaching at the Harvey Boxing Club in Harvey IL. Amateur boxing career As an amateur, Ratliff won the Chicago Golden Gloves title in 1980, and won a decision against Mitch Green in intercity competition. Professional boxing career Ratliff turned professional in 1980 and won the WBC and lineal cruiserweight titles with a decision win over Carlos De León in 1985. He lost the belt in his first defense to Bernard Benton via decision the same year. Bernard Benton (born January 6, 1957) is an American retired professional boxer in the Cruiserweight division who held the WBC and ''The Ring'' cruiserweight titles. Professional career Known as "The Bull", Benton turned pro in 1981 and won the WBC and lineal cruiserweight titles with a decision win over Alfonso Ratliff in 1985. He was due to defend against David Pearce who had knocked him out in a previous amateur bout. Benton declined to fight Pearce and subsequently lost the belt in his first defense to Carlos De León via decision the following year. He retired in 1995. Harold Lederman
Harold Lederman (January 26, 1940 – May 11, 2019) was an American boxing judge and analyst. He began his career as a boxing judge in 1967 and joined the cast of '' HBO World Championship Boxing'' in 1986, and was there until HBO dropped boxing in 2018. Lederman was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the class of 2016. Lederman died on May 11, 2019, at 79 years of age, from cancer. Education and career Lederman attended Columbia University and upon graduation earned a license from New York's State Athletic Commission to judge title fights on June 26, 1967. He judged (by his count) over a hundred title fights in every corner of the globe, all the while maintaining his pharmacy practice in New York. In 1986, HBO executive producer Ross Greenburg invited Lederman to join HBO's boxing show World Championship Boxing as an "expert commentator". Richie Giachetti
Richie Giachetti (April 20, 1940 – February 3, 2016) was an American boxing trainer who worked with a number of world champions including Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson. He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Giachetti first began working in boxing in 1961 and also helped Don King in his first promotion with Muhammad Ali. Most famous for guiding Holmes to the heavyweight championship, he trained many other top fighters of the 1970s and 1980s including Earnie Shavers, Aaron Pryor and Greg Page. When Mike Tyson was dethroned as heavyweight champion by James "Buster" Douglas in 1990 in a 10th-round knockout in Tokyo, King inserted Giachetti as Tyson's trainer. Eddie Futch
Eddie Futch (August 9, 1911 – October 10, 2001) was an American boxing trainer. Among the fighters he trained are Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Larry Holmes, and Trevor Berbick, four of the five men to defeat Muhammad Ali. Futch also trained Riddick Bowe and Montell Griffin when they handed future Hall of Fame fighters Evander Holyfield and Roy Jones Jr. their first professional defeats. In Baltimore, Maryland, the Futch Gym boxing gymnasium is named after the trainer. He also trained Ireland’s first ever WBC World Champion, Wayne McCullough. Eddie Futch was married to Eva Marlene Futch from March 21, 1996, until his death. Futch often called her "The love of his life."
