Lady Macbeth
Lady Macbeth is a leading character in William Shakespeare's tragedy ''Macbeth'' (). As the wife of the play's tragic hero, Macbeth (a Scottish nobleman), Lady Macbeth goads her husband into committing regicide, after which she becomes queen of Scotland. Some regard her as becoming more powerful than Macbeth when she does this, because she is able to manipulate him into doing what she wants. After Macbeth becomes a murderous tyrant, she is driven to madness by guilt over their crimes and kills herself offstage. Lady Macbeth is a powerful presence in the play, most notably in the first two acts. Following the murder of King Duncan, however, her role in the plot diminishes. She becomes an uninvolved spectator to Macbeth's plotting and a nervous hostess at a banquet dominated by her husband's hallucinations. Her sleepwalking scene in the fifth act is a turning point in the play, and her line "Out, damned spot!" has become a phrase familiar to many speakers of the English langu ...

Lady Macbeth (historical)
Gruoch ingen Boite () was a Scottish queen, the daughter of Boite mac Cináeda, son of Cináed II. The dates of her life are uncertain. She is most famous for being the wife and queen of MacBethad mac Findlaích (Macbeth), as well as the basis for Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's ''Macbeth''. However, Shakespeare's Macbeth is based on ''Holinshed's Chronicles'' (published in 1577) and is not historically accurate. Life Gruoch is believed to have been born in 1015 or before, the daughter of Boite mac Cináeda; her mother's name is not known. On her father's side, she was the granddaughter of either Kenneth II or Kenneth III and by virtue of this, may have had a claim to the Scottish throne herself. Before 1032, Gruoch was married to Gille Coemgáin mac Maíl Brigti, the Mormaer (Earl) of Moray, with whom she had at least one son, Lulach mac Gille Coemgáin, later King of Scots. Gille Coemgáin was killed in 1032, burned to death in a hall with 50 of his men. After the death o ...

Lady Macbeth (sculpture)
''Lady Macbeth'' is a statue of the Shakespearean character Lady Macbeth by German American sculptor Elisabet Ney. The sculpture is a life-size full-length female figure rendered in marble. Completed in 1905, ''Lady Macbeth'' is one of Ney's last works and was regarded by the artist as her masterpiece. It is housed in Washington, D.C., in the Luce Foundation Center for American Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, which acquired the piece in 1998. History Ney began sculpting ''Lady Macbeth'' in 1903, shortly after she completed the design of her memorial statue of Albert Sidney Johnston. Unlike Ney's other major contemporary works, the statue was not made in response to any commission or for any particular buyer. She developed the piece in her studio in Austin, Texas, ''Formosa'' (now the Elisabet Ney Museum), where the plaster model is still on display. The piece was cut in marble in Italy beginning in 1903, alongside second copies of Ney's portraits of Sam Houston and S ...
