Ladies Of The Maccabees
The Ladies of the Maccabees (acronym, LOTM; 1886-1926), the female Auxiliary (fraternal orders), auxiliary of the Knights of the Maccabees, was an insurance benefit society. It was the first fraternal benefit society operated exclusively by women. Established as a woman's auxiliary in 1886, it was approved by the 1890 "Great Camp" of the Knights, incorporated in 1891, split in 1892, re-incorporated in 1895 in conformity with the provisions of the Fraternal Act of 1893, and merged into the Knights in 1926. In 1982, the Ladies of the Maccabees Building, in Port Huron, Michigan was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The different branches were called "Hives." The "Supreme Hive" (later "Woman's Benefit Association of the Maccabees) was organized in 1892 "to harmonize the workings of various Great Hives and to render their social, ritualistic, and other work uniform." Bina West Miller
Bina West Miller (1867 - 18 April 1954) was an American businesswoman. She was a leader of the Ladies of the Maccabees. Biography Sabina ("Bina") M. West was born in 1867, in Columbus Township, St. Clair County, Michigan. Beginning her career as a teacher at Capac High School, Miller became a member of the Knights of the Maccabees. She began providing life insurance to women by working with the Maccabees and helped found the Woman's Benefit Association of the Maccabees, known today as Women's Life. Miller founded one of the first organizations to offer life insurance to women with $500 of borrowed money. She heavily promoted the group, and within a decade grew membership to 100,000 women. The company she founded is today the Woman's Life Insurance Society, located in Port Huron, Michigan. Katherine Kurt (1852–1910) was an American homeopathic physician. She was the first woman physician who ever practiced in Akron, Ohio. Early life and education Katherine Kurt was born in Sterling or Wooster, Ohio. December 19, 1852. Her parents were John and Katherine Kurt, both of Swiss descent. She was the eighth of a family of twelve children, and the first born in the U.S. The father was a weaver and found it hard to keep so large a family. Upon the death of the mother, when Katherine was eight years old, all the children but one or two of the older ones were placed in the homes of friends. The father was opposed to having any of the children legally adopted by his friends, but he placed Katherine in a family where, for a number of years, she had a home. Lillian Hollister
Lillian Hollister (September 8, 1853 – August 4, 1911) was an American temperance and church worker. Hollister served as Supreme Commander of the Ladies of the Maccabees. Early years and education Lillian Bates was born in Milford, Michigan, September 8, 1853. Her father, Phineas Bates. He was a well-to-do farmer of Oakland County, Michigan, having emigrated from New York at an early day. He was a deacon in the Baptist Church and an earnest anti-slavery man. Her father's family were all musicians. Hollister was one of a family of six children. She was the youngest but one of three brothers and three sisters, four of whom became teachers. At the age of four and a half years, she began her schoolgirl days, walking one and a half miles to the district schoolhouse.
