The Labour Party in Northern Ireland (LPNI) is the UK Labour Party's regional constituency organisation that operates in Northern Ireland. The Labour Party is not a registered political party in Northern Ireland and does not currently contest elections there, as it has an electoral pact with the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) to support its candidates. In the 2016 Assembly elections, eight members of the party ran for election under the name of the Northern Ireland Labour Representation Committee, as the Labour Party National Executive Committee had refused to allow candidates to stand as official Labour Party candidates. Social Democratic And Labour Party
The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP; ) is a social democratic and Irish nationalist political party in Northern Ireland. The SDLP currently has eight members in the Northern Ireland Assembly ( MLAs) and two members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. The SDLP party platform advocates Irish reunification and, pending the unity of all the people of Ireland and while the northern jurisdiction remains part of the United Kingdom, further devolution of powers. Douglas McIldoon
Douglas Bowman McIldoon (born 13 September 1945) is a former political activist and civil servant in Northern Ireland. Born in Belfast, McIldoon studied at Methodist College Belfast, Queen's College, Oxford and the London School of Economics. From 1967 to 1969, he undertook research at the Oxford Centre for Management Studies. An activist in the Northern Ireland Labour Party (NILP), he was appointed Party Secretary in 1969, and held the post through the 1970s. As the NILP lost members, McIldoon focused on his career at the Department of the Environment. For three years from 1990, he was seconded to the European Commission. In 1995, he was appointed head of The Utility Regulator in Northern Ireland, a role in which he adopted a high profile and was credited by the ''Belfast Telegraph'' with achieving lower prices for electricity users. The Northern Ireland Labour Party (NILP) was a political party in Northern Ireland which operated from 1924 until 1987. Origins The roots of the NILP can be traced back to the formation of the Belfast Labour Party in 1892. Previously, in 1885, Alexander Bowman had stood in North Belfast as an independent labour candidate, supported by the Belfast Trades Council. Six Labour candidates were elected to Belfast Corporation in 1897 – the first Labour councillors in Ireland. There continued to be Labour representation on Belfast Corporation up to the 1911 elections when no Labour candidates were returned. Margaret Mary Ritchie, Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick (born 25 March 1958), is a Northern Irish politician who was the Leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) from 2010 to 2011. Antony Evelyn Alcock (12 September 1936 – 2 September 2006 University of Ulster) was a British historian and Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician. Biography Born in Valletta, Malta, he grew up in Devon and Hampshire while at Harrow School from 1950 to 1954. Following his education he was Commissioned during National Service into the Seaforth Highlanders. After leaving the Army in 1957 he studied History and Political Science at McGill University Montreal following which he moved to the United States and 1962 he gained an MA in history from Stanford University.
