The majority of the countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, formerly known as the British Commonwealth, still criminalise sexual acts between consenting adults of the same sex and other forms of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. Homosexual activity remains a criminal offence in 29 of the 56 sovereign states of the Commonwealth; and legal in only 27. This has been described as being the result of "the major historical influence" or legacy of the British Empire. The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 56 sovereign states, referred to as Commonwealth countries. Most of them were British colonies or dependencies of those colonies. Kamalesh Sharma (born 30 September 1941) is an Indian diplomat who served as the fifth secretary-general of the Commonwealth of Nations from 2008 to 2016.
