L'Événement was a French daily newspaper focused on politics and literature, established in 1872. History The idea for ''L'Événement'' was conceived in the autumn of 1870 but was delayed due to the upheavals of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. The newspaper was launched on 7 April 1872.''L’Événement'', 7 April 1872, p. 1. Its founders, Edmond Magnier and Auguste Dumont (journalist), Auguste Dumont, were former contributors to ''Le Figaro''.Émile Mermet (1880), pp. 187–189.Henri Avenel (1900), pp. 681–682. ''Happening'' () is a 2021 French period drama film directed by Audrey Diwan. The film's adapted screenplay was written by Diwan and Marcia Romano from the 2000 memoir ''Happening'' by Annie Ernaux. Set in 1963, the film stars Anamaria Vartolomei as Anne, who experiences the emotionally and physically traumatic process of obtaining an abortion in France before it was legalized. The film also stars Luàna Bajrami, Pio Marmaï, Sandrine Bonnaire, Anna Mouglalis, Louise Chevillotte, Kacey Mottet Kelin, and Louise Orry-Diquéro in supporting roles with cinematography by Laurent Tangy. ''Happening'' premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 6, 2021, where it won the Golden Lion and received universal acclaim from critics. ''Happening'' () is a 2000 memoir by Annie Ernaux. Synopsis Set in 1963, four years before the legalization of oral contraception in France and twelve years before the Veil Act, the autobiographical narrative describes the troubles a young student faces when seeking out an illegal abortion. The story begins by depicting how she waited at Lariboisière Hospital for the result of a serology examination for HIV and how she "burst out laughing" as the result was " negative". Following this she speaks about a similar gruelling experience of finding out her pregnancy and the consequences such as hiding it from her parents and public, searching for a doctor who would illegally abort the child, revealing pregnancy to some close ones for help in abortion and the horror of abortion itself, which is the rest of the book.
