Vermilion County is a county in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Illinois, between the Indiana border and Champaign County. It was established in 1826 and was the 45th of Illinois' 102 counties. According to the 2020 United States census, it had a population of 74,188. It contains 21 incorporated settlements; the county seat and largest city is Danville. Danville is a city in Vermilion County, Illinois, United States, and its county seat. The populations was 29,204 as of the 2020 census. It is the principal city of the Danville micropolitan area. History The area that is now Danville was once home to the Miami, Kickapoo, and Potawatomi tribes of Native Americans. Danville was founded in 1827 on of land donated by Guy W. Smith and donated by Dan W. Beckwith. The sale of lots was set for April 10, 1827, and advertised in newspapers in Indianapolis, Indiana and the state capital of Vandalia. The first post office was established in May of the same year in the house of Amos Williams, organizer of Vermilion and Edgar Counties and a prominent Danville citizen. Williams and Beckwith drew up the first plat map; the city was named after Dan Beckwith at Williams' suggestion, although Beckwith suggested the names "Williamsburg" and "Williamstown". Blount Township is a township in Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 3,428 and it contained 1,475 housing units. History Blount Township was established in 1856 from portions of Newell and Pilot townships. It was originally named after John C. Frémont, the Republican candidate for president that year. Democrats objected, and the township was named after early settler Abraham Blount. Kickapoo State Recreation Area
Kickapoo State Recreation Area is an List of Illinois state parks, Illinois state park on in Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. Located between Oakwood, Illinois and Danville, Illinois, this park is easily accessible through route I-74. It is away from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and from Indianapolis. According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the name Kickapoo originated from the Kickapoo people, Kickapoo village that once existed near the junction of the Salt Fork and Middle Fork branches of the Vermilion River (Wabash River tributary), Vermilion River. After Europeans settled in the area and displaced the Native Americans, the Europeans began to dig wells to harvest salt from salt springs, called salines.
