Kíla
Kíla is an Irish folk music group formed in 1987 in Coláiste Eoin, an Irish language secondary school in County Dublin. History Early formation The original lineup of the band included Rossa Ó Snodaigh (whistle and Bones (instrument), bones), Rónán Ó Snodaigh (bodhrán), Eoin Dillon (uilleann pipes), Colm Mac Con Iomaire (fiddle), Karl Odlum (bass) and David Odlum (guitar). In 1988, one of Rossa and Rónán's older brother's, flute player Colm Ó Snodaigh, joined the band. Rónán, Rossa and Colm are brothers of Teachta Dála, Aengus Ó Snodaigh, and sons of Pádraig Ó Snodaigh and Clíodna Cussen. They began their musical careers Street performance, busking in Dublin. In their first year, they busked on Grafton Street nearly every week. Rónán Ó Snodaigh
Rónán Ó Snodaigh (born 1 January 1970 in Dublin, Ireland) is a songwriter, composer, musician, poet and founding member and lead vocalist in the musical group Kíla. He has revolutionised the playing of the bodhrán and written many songs in Irish and English. He has written and released seven solo albums. Amongst the many percussion instruments Ó Snodaigh plays are bodhrán, djembe, congas, and bongos. As regards stringed instruments he plays the guitar and to a lesser extent the harp. He is the second youngest of six boys born to historian and publisher Pádraig Ó Snodaigh and sculptor Cliodhna Cussen. He is a brother of politician Aengus Ó Snodaigh and of course his bandmates Colm and Rossa Ó Snodaigh. He has four children and a stepson and currently lives in Bray, Co. Wicklow. David Odlum
David Odlum is an Irish music producer, engineer, guitarist, and drummer who has worked and played with Academy Award winners and Mercury Prize nominees. Originally a member of Kíla, a band which was founded during his schooldays at Coláiste Eoin, he left them and joined rock group The Frames, fronted by the Academy Award-winner Glen Hansard, and with whom he played guitar from 1990 until 2002. Since leaving the band, he has pursued a career as a music producer. Odlum has established a long running association with singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes, producing her Mercury Prize-nominated debut album ''Night on My Side'', as well as later albums '' The Hollow of Morning, '' Let It Break and an as-yet untitled fifth album due in 2014. Oki (musician)
, known professionally as OKI, is a Japanese musician of mixed Japanese Ainu ancestry. Early life and education Oki was born in Hokkaido in 1957, and grew up in Kanagawa Prefecture. He studied industrial arts at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. His father, Bikki Sunazawa, was a renowned wood sculptor. Oki grew up with his Japanese mother, and did not know of his Ainu heritage or meet his father until he was an adult. Career From 1987 to 1992 Oki lived in New York City working as a special effects technician for movies. Back in Japan in 1993, a cousin gave him a tonkori, an Ainu stringed instrument, and he slowly taught himself how to play it. He uses it in his performances and mixes traditional Ainu music with reggae, dub and other styles of world music. He also plays guitar and traditional Ainu percussion instruments. Coláiste Eoin is a Catholic voluntary Gaelcholáiste (Irish language scondary school) for boys, under the trusteeship of the Edmund Rice Schools Trust, in Booterstown, County Dublin, Ireland. Bruno Coulais
Bruno Coulais (born 13 January 1954) is a French composer, most widely known for his music on film soundtracks. Life and career Coulais was born in Paris; his father, Farth Coulais, is from Vendée, and his mother, Bernsy Coulais, was born in Paris. Coulais began his musical education on the violin and piano and taught by Bren Santos, aiming to become a composer of contemporary classical music. However, a series of acquaintances gradually re-oriented him towards film music. Coulais met François Reichenbach, who asked him in 1977 to sonorize his documentary ''México mágico'' who permit to compose the first soundtracks for Jacques Davila "qui trop embrasse" en 1986 . The Frames
The Frames are an Irish rock band based in Dublin. Founded in 1990 by Glen Hansard, the band has been influential in the Dublin rock music scene. The group has released six studio albums. In addition to Hansard, the band's current line-up includes original member Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Joe Doyle, and Rob Bochnik. History The band was established in 1990 and consists of survivors of Dublin's prolific early 1990s rock-and-roll scene. Cartoon Saloon is an Irish animation film, short film and television studio based in Kilkenny which provides film TV and short film services. The studio is best known for its animated feature films ''The Secret of Kells'', ''Song of the Sea'', '' The Breadwinner'' and ''Wolfwalkers''. Aengus Ó Snodaigh (; born 31 July 1964) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician, author and historian who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin South-Central constituency since the 2002 general election. Early and personal life A Dubliner and Irish language speaker, he attended school at Scoil Lorcáin and Coláiste Eoin, before studying at University College Dublin (UCD). Ó Snodaigh joined Sinn Féin while at university, where he was active in student politics, in 1983. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in History and Geography, and a Higher Diploma in Education. Colm Mac Con Iomaire
Colm Mac Con Iomaire () is an Irish composer and musician from Blackrock, County Dublin, Ireland, who plays keyboards, violin and sings with The Frames. He is the son of Liam Mac Con Iomaire, a writer, journalist and broadcaster. He attended school at Coláiste Eoin, an Irish Language secondary school ( Meánscoil) in Co. Dublin. While there, in 1987, he was a founder member of the Irish folk group Kíla. Mac Con Iomaire has been involved with The Frames since 1990 and his interest in the Irish Language led to The Frames's involvement in two Irish-language albums released for the Irish charity '' Concern'' during Seachtain na Gaeilge. Pádraig Ó Snodaigh (born Oliver Snoddy; 18 May 1935 – 2 January 2025) was an Irish language activist, poet, writer, and publisher. He worked for the Irish Electricity Supply Board, and later in the National Museum of Ireland. He was a president of Conradh na Gaeilge, the Gaelic League. Life and career Pádraig Ó Snodaigh was born in Carlow, Ireland on 18 May 1935. From 1970 to 1973, he was co-editor with Mícheál ÓBréartún of , an Irish language current affairs magazine. ''The Secret of Kells'' is a 2009 animated fantasy drama film directed by Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey, produced by Paul Young, Didier Brunner and Viviane Vanfleteren, written by Fabrice Ziolkowski.
