Mount Kyllini or Mount Cyllene (; , ), also known as Mount Ziria (, ), is a mountain on the Peloponnese in Greece famous for its association with the god Hermes. It rises to above sea level, making it the second highest point on the peninsula. It is located near the border between the historic regions of Arcadia (ancient region), Arcadia and Achaea—in the northeast of Arcadia, and entirely within modern Corinthia. Kyllini, Elis
Kyllini () is a port town and a community in the municipal unit of Kastro-Kyllini, Elis, Greece. It is situated on the Ionian Sea coast, 11 km west of Andravida, 28 km northeast of Zakynthos and 39 km northwest of Pyrgos. From the port of Kyllini there are several ferry connections to the Ionian islands Zakynthos and Cephalonia. It was the terminus of the now dismantled Kavasila–Kyllini railway. Cyllene (Elis)
Cyllene or Kyllene () was a seaport town of ancient Elis, distant 120 stadia from the city of Elis. Cyllene was an ancient place. It is mentioned by Homer as one of the towns of the Epeians; and if we are to believe Dionysius Periegetes, it was the port from which the Pelasgians sailed to Italy. Pausanias, moreover, mentions it as visited at an early period by the merchants of Aegina, and as the port from which the exiled Messenians after the conclusion of the Second Messenian War, sailed away to found a colony in Italy or Sicily. Cyllene was burnt by the Corcyraeans in 435 BCE, because it had supplied ships to the Corinthians. It is again mentioned in 429 BCE, as the naval station of the Peloponnesian fleet during the Peloponnesian War, when Phormion commanded an Athenian squadron in the Corinthian Gulf. Kastro-Kyllini () is a former Communities and Municipalities of Greece, municipality in Elis (regional unit), Elis, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Andravida-Kyllini, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 49.322 km2. The population was 3,272 in 2021. The municipality Kastro-Kyllini was created in 1999 as part of the Kapodistrias reform from the formerly independent communities Kyllini, Elis, Kyllini, #Kato Panagia, Kato Panagia, #Kastro, Kastro and #Neochori, Neochori, that became municipal districts. Sheppard in 2003, receiving the temporary designation . Cyllene (1895–1925) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career that lasted from 1897 until 1899, Cyllene won nine of his eleven starts, winning major races and being regarded as the best horse of his generation at two, three and four years of age. In a stud career which began in Britain and ended in Argentina, Cyllene became an important and influential stallion. He sired four winners of The Derby and is the direct male-line ancestor of most modern thoroughbreds. Background Cyllene, a chestnut horse with a white stripe and two white socks was bred by his owner, Charles Day Rose at the Hardwicke Stud near Pangbourne in Berkshire. He was a small, late foal, born in May and was never entered in the Classics as he was thought unlikely to be strong or mature enough to compete at the highest level at an early age.
