Kurukkalmadam Massacre
The Kurukkalmadam massacre was a massacre of Sri Lankan Muslims in Kurukkalmadam by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The number of casualties is estimated to be 60-168. Background Following the breakdown of the June 1990 peace talks, Tamil-Muslim relations in the Eastern Province deteriorated rapidly. Many Muslims in the East took a pro-army stance in the war. Some acted as informants for the army, identifying LTTE hideouts and LTTE supporters. A cycle of tit-for-tat violence between the LTTE and Muslim Home Guards emerged, leading to the massacres of civilians on both sides. Incident Muslim travellers from Kattankudy and Colombo in vehicles, including Hajj pilgrims, were stopped by the LTTE near Kurukkalmadam. Some Muslims were removed from the vehicles but others were allowed to return, allegedly so that they could inform other Muslims about what was happening at Kurukkalmadam. Kurukkalmadam
Kurukkalmadam is a village in district Batticaloa of Sri Lanka. It is located about 25 km south east of Batticaloa and located in Kaluwanchikudy-Manmunai South D S at about 5 km north of town Kaluwanchikudy. Its earlier name was Guruandhar, signifying Gurudhanagar, which in punjabi language, Punjabi means a city of Guru. The old name of Batticaloa District, Batticaloa was Matia Kullam. Guru Nanak visited Sri Lanka in the early sixteenth century and recent research shows he reached Batticaloa by ship. Ashok Kumar Kainth excavated a stone carving here in which is contained the name of First Sikh Guru Nanak. Historical significance It is believed that in approximately 1511 AD Sikh guru Guru Nanak may have come here and stayed for some months and five trees constituting two Banyan, one Peepal, one Neem, one Reetha etc. of Guru Nanak period still exist here. Sri Lankan Moors (; Arwi: ; ; formerly Ceylon Moors; colloquially referred to as Sri Lankan Muslims) are an ethnic minority group in Sri Lanka, comprising 9.3% of the country's total population. Most of them are native speakers of the Tamil language. The majority of Moors who are not native to Sri Lanka's Northern Province, Sri Lanka, Northern and Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, Eastern provinces also speak Sinhala language, Sinhalese as a second language. Liberation Tigers Of Tamil Eelam
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE; , ; also known as the Tamil Tigers) was a Tamil militant organization, that was based in the northern and eastern Sri Lanka. The LTTE fought to create an independent Tamil state called Tamil Eelam in the northeast of the island in response to violent persecution and discriminatory policies against Sri Lankan Tamils by the Sinhalese-dominated Sri Lankan Government. The leader of the LTTE, Velupillai Prabhakaran, cited the 1958 anti-Tamil pogrom as one of the factors that led him to militancy. In 1975, he assassinated the Mayor of Jaffna, Alfred Duraiappah, in revenge for the 1974 Tamil conference incident. The LTTE was subsequently founded in 1976 as a reaction to the Sri Lankan Constitution of 1972 which prescribed Buddhism as the primary religion of the country, and Sinhala as its national language. On 11 June 1990, the militant organisation Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) carried out a massacre of unarmed police officers in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province.
