Korean indie, referring to independent music in South Korea, developed in the 1990s in Hongdae, Seoul, Hongdae, an area of Northwestern Seoul. It is widely regarded as the counterpart to K-pop; whereas K-pop is characterized by a commercialized image targeting a specific audience, Korean indie emphasizes the authentic messages of musicians. Background South Korea's first modern wave of indie music began after the end of the military regime in 1987, coinciding with the rise of South Korea's popular culture during the early to mid-1990s. While experienced rock musicians tried to revive their musical careers, the younger generation developed a new punk and rock community in the Hongdae, Seoul, Hongdae area of Seoul. Independent music (also commonly known as indie music, or simply indie) is a broad style of music characterized by creative freedoms, low-budgets, and a DIY ethic, do-it-yourself approach to music creation, which originated from the liberties afforded by independent record labels. Jambinai
Jambinai () are a Korean post-rock band formed in Seoul in 2009. The band currently consists of Kim Bo-mi, Lee Il-woo, Sim Eun-yong, Yu Byeong-koo and Choi Jae-hyuk. Their debut album '' Différance'' won the award for Best Crossover Album at the 2013 Korean Music Awards. Their second album ''Hermitage'' was released in 2016 on Bella Union. During the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony in Pyeongchang, Jambinai performed with an orchestra of geomungo players. Ssamzie Sound Festival was an annual indie music festival held in South Korea from 1999-2014. The first version of the festival was held in Yonsei University, with 20 local bands performing. South By Southwest
South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and Convention (meeting), conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas. It began in 1987 and has continued growing in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. DMZ Peace Train Music Festival
DMZ Peace Train Music Festival is a music festival held in Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province, South Korea. It is held close to the border with North Korea, and is intended to promote peace and unification at a place symbolizing division of the Korean Peninsula. It was held as relations between the two Koreas warmed up. Hosted by Seoul City, Cheorwon County, and Gangwon Province, the event was created when Glastonbury Festival and The Great Escape Festival main booker Martin Elbourne visited Korea in 2017 and visited the DMZ with Zandari Festa organizers Dalse Kong Yoon-young and Lee Dong-yeon. Busan Rock Festival
Busan Rock Festival (), inaugurated in 2000, is an outdoor music festival that takes place every summer in Busan. It is one of South Korea's longest-running modern music festivals. The lineups include acts of various genres such as rock, metal, indie. The admission was free of charge until 2019, when it transitioned into a ticketed event. The festival has undergone multiple fee changes, having costed 65 thousand won in 2019, increasing to 110 thousand won in 2023. Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival () is a rock festival which is held annually in Incheon, South Korea for three days in August. Launched in 2006, it is considered one of the biggest live music events in South Korea. The festival covers various genres, but mainly rock music and electronic music. No Brain () is a South Korean punk rock band widely considered one of the godfathers of the Korean punk scene.
