In the episode of '' Star Trek: The Original Series'' titled "Plato's Stepchildren", season 3 episode 10, first broadcast November 22, 1968, Uhura (played by Afro-American actress Nichelle Nichols) and Captain Kirk (played by white actor William Shatner) kiss. The episode is often cited—incorrectly—as the first interracial kiss on television. It was, however, the first instance in which a kiss between a black person and a white person on U.S. television was scripted, as an earlier kiss on '' Movin' with Nancy'' was unscripted. The episode aired one year after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down nationwide laws prohibiting interracial marriage. Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y de Acha III (March 2, 1917 – December 2, 1986), known as Desi Arnaz, was a Cuban-American actor, musician, producer, and bandleader. He played Ricky Ricardo on the American television sitcom ''I Love Lucy'', in which he co-starred with his wife Lucille Ball. Arnaz and Ball are credited as the innovators of the Broadcast syndication, syndicated rerun, which they pioneered with the ''I Love Lucy'' series.
