Kenton Bank Railway Station
Kenton Bank was a railway station on the Ponteland Railway, which ran between South Gosforth and Ponteland, with a sub-branch line to Darras Hall. The station served Kenton in Newcastle upon Tyne. It was opened in 1905 as Kenton, renamed in 1923, and was closed to passengers in 1929, and to goods traffic in 1965. The current Bank Foot station, on the Tyne and Wear Metro, lies on the site of the original station site. History The Gosforth and Ponteland Light Railway was formed in 1899, under the Light Railways Act 1896 ( 59 & 60 Vict. c. 48). Construction of the line by the North Eastern Railway was authorised by Parliament in February 1901. Kenton, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Kenton is a suburb and electoral ward in the north west of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the county of Tyne and Wear, England. It borders the Town Moor and Gosforth. Kenton also has close road links to Newcastle Airport. The ward population at the 2011 Census was 11,605. The area borders Kingston Park, notable for the Kingston Park shopping centre, as well as Kenton School, one of the largest schools in the UK with approximately 2000 students. The Light Railways Act 1896 ( 59 & 60 Vict. c. 48) was an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Airport (also known as Newcastle Airport) is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving Newcastle International Airport in the English city of Newcastle upon Tyne. It opened as a terminus station in 1991, following the opening of the extension from Bank Foot to Airport. Mid-Suffolk Light Railway
The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway (MSLR) was a standard gauge railway intended to open up an agricultural area of central Suffolk; it took advantage of the reduced construction cost enabled by the Light Railways Act 1896. It was launched with considerable enthusiasm by local interests, and was to build a network, but actual share subscription was weak, and the company over-reached its available financial resources. It opened of route from Haughley to Laxfield in 1904 to goods traffic only, and income was poor, further worsening the company's financial situation. The Board continued to harbour ambitions to complete the planned network, but crippling interest on loans and capital repayments falling due forced the company into receivership in 1906.
