Ken Wood (baseball)
Kenneth Lanier Wood (July 1, 1924 – November 22, 2007) was an American professional baseball player. He played all or part of six seasons in Major League Baseball for the St. Louis Browns (1948–51), Boston Red Sox (1952) and Washington Senators (1901–60), Washington Senators (1952–53), mostly as a right fielder, right or left fielder. He batted and threw right-handed. Wood was born in Lincolnton, North Carolina. An outfielder with a strong arm, in 1949 he threw 2 runners out at home plate in the same inning. The first runner attempted to score from second base on a right field single. Woods threw to Sherm Lollar the catcher who tagged the runner out. The next hitter hit a fly ball to right field where Woods caught it with a runner on third base. Woods also threw a perfect strike to Sherman Lollar who again tagged the runner out. Kenneth Wood (4 October 1916 – 19 October 1997) was an English engineer, entrepreneur and businessman. He is best known as the founder of the Kenwood Manufacturing Company and for the development of the eponymous Kenwood Chef food mixer. Life and career Grandson of confectionery manufacturer Charles Riley Maynard, founder of Maynards, Kenneth Wood was born on 4 October 1916 in Lewisham in London. He was brought up in Chelsfield in Kent and was educated at Bromley County School before leaving home in 1930, aged fourteen to join the merchant navy for five years, after which, he studied electrical engineering and accountancy at night school. A year later, in 1936, he set up his own company, Dickson & Wood, selling, installing and repairing radios and televisions. In 1939, he sold the company and joined the Royal Air Force where he worked as an engineer at the Admiralty developing radar and electronic controls. Ken Wood (8 October 1929 – 16 June 2018) was an Australian swimming (sport), swimmer and swimming coach and a three-time Olympic medal winner. He was the head coach at the Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club at Redcliffe, Queensland, on the northern edge of Brisbane. Biography Before moving into swimming coaching, he was a used car salesman and a Sydney cab driver. Wood's sporting career included playing for Footscray in the VFL, first grade cricketer for North Sydney and Cairns and was also a patrol captain and champion surf boat rower and lifesaver with Warriewood SLSC on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Wood's replaced Laurie Lawrence in Townsville in the early 1970s and notable swimmers coached included Lesleigh Harvey and Michelle Pearson. Kenneth Wood (21 November 1930 – 8 September 2008) was a British middle-distance runner. He ran one of the early Four-minute mile runs and competed at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Biography Wood competed with the Sheffield United Harriers athletic club. Between 1954 and 1961 he won the Emsley Carr Mile a record four times. In this period he was selected to run for Great Britain in the 1956 Olympic 1500 metres finishing ninth in the final. Wood became the British 1 mile champion after winning the British AAA Championships title at the 1956 AAA Championships and 1959 AAA Championships. In May 1955 Wood finished second in a two-mile race behind Sándor Iharos both breaking the world two mile outdoor record. Woods time being 8:34.8. He became the fourteenth athlete (the fifth from the UK) to officially run a Four-minute mile, achieving a time of 3:59.3 on 19 July 1957. Kenneth Thomas Wood (15 May 1906 – 11 November 1942) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s. He played for North Sydney in the NSWRL competition. Background Wood was born in Petersham, New South Wales on 15 May 1906. Playing career Wood made his first grade debut for North Sydney against St George in Round 14 1928 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In 1928, Norths finished 4th on the table and qualified for the finals. Wood scored a try in the club's semi final defeat against Eastern Suburbs. Wood played representative football for Metropolis against New Zealand in 1930. Wood played with Norths up until the end of 1934 before retiring. Post playing Wood enlisted in the Australian Army in 1940 whilst he was living in Brisbane, Queensland. Death Wood served in World War II and fought on battles in the Kokoda Track against the Japanese. Kenneth Berridge Wood known as Ken Wood was a rugby union centre who played 121 times for Leicester Tigers between 1906 and 1919, scoring 33 tries and 4 drop goals for points total of 115. Wood made his Leicester debut on 13 October 1906 at Welford Road against Bristol. He played in two Midlands Counties Cup-winning sides and in 1908 represented Midlands and East Midlands Counties in their win against Australia. Hampstead Heath Woods
Hampstead Heath Woods is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Hampstead in the London Borough of Camden. It is in two separate areas within Hampstead Heath, North Wood between Kenwood House and Hampstead Lane, and the larger Ken Wood, south of Kenwood House. The site has many old and over-mature trees, and extensive dead wood which provides a habitat for invertebrates, including the nationally rare jewel beetle ''Agrilus pannonicus''. This type of canopy is uncommon nationally and very scarce in Greater London. The main trees are sessile oak and beech, with a few pedunculate oaks and wild service trees. The shrub layer is dominated by holly and rowan. Next to Ken Wood is a small valley which has soft-rush, six sphagnum species and water horsetail. Kenneth Allen Woods (born 1968) is an American conductor, composer and cellist, resident in the UK. Early career Woods studied conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. His subsequent conducting mentors have included Leonard Slatkin, David Zinman, Jorma Panula and Gerhard Samuel. In 2000, Zinman selected Woods to be a fellow in the inaugural class of the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen. In 2001, Slatkin chose Woods as one of four participants in the Kennedy Center National Conducting Institute. Woods was music director of the Dayton Philharmonic in 1999, of the Grande Ronde Symphony from 1999 to 2002, and of the Oregon East Symphony (OES) from 2000 to 2009.
