Kelly The Second
''Kelly the Second'' is a 1936 American romantic comedy film directed by Gus Meins and starring Patsy Kelly, Guinn Williams, and Charley Chase. This Hal Roach studio film was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The title is a pun, "Second" referring not to lineage but a boxer's corner man (or woman in this case). It was Chase's final feature as well as his last film for Roach after a 15-year run at the studio; Roach was phasing out short subjects and didn't feel Chase could carry a feature, so he was let go. Plot After a traffic incident culminating in a brawl, feisty Molly Kelly (Kelly) comes up with the idea of making truck driver Cecil Callahan (Williams) a professional boxer, aided by her boss Doc Klum (Chase). Complications arise when mobster Ike Arnold (Brophy), impressed by Cecil's punching, declares himself a partner, putting additional pressure on him to win. Gus Meins
Gus Meins (March 6, 1893 – August 1, 1940), born Gustave Peter Ludwig Luley, was an American film director. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Career Meins started out in the ‘teens as a cartoonist for the ''Los Angeles Evening Herald'' before becoming a comedy writer for Fox Film in 1919. In the 1920s, Meins directed a number of silent film, silent short subjects film series for Universal Pictures, including the ''Buster Brown'' comedies. He is best known as senior director of Hal Roach's ''Our Gang'' comedies from 1934 to 1936, and also as director of Laurel and Hardy's ''Babes in Toyland (1934 film), Babes in Toyland'' (1934). His assistant director was a young Gordon Douglas (director), Gordon Douglas, who became senior director in 1936 when Meins left ''Our Gang'' for other directing jobs at Roach. Harry Bernard
Harry Bernard (January 13, 1878 – November 4, 1940) was an American actor and comedian. Charlie Hall (also credited Charley Hall; 19 August 1899 – 7 December 1959) was an English film actor. He is best known as the "Little Nemesis" of Laurel and Hardy. He performed in nearly 50 films with them, making Hall the most frequent supporting actor in the comedy duo's productions. Life and career Hall was born in Ward End, Birmingham, Warwickshire, and learned carpentry as a trade; however, as a teenager, he became a member of the Fred Karno troupe of stage comedians. In his late teens, he visited his sister in New York City and stayed there, finding employment as a stagehand. While working behind the scenes, he met the comic actor Bobby Dunn and they became friends; Dunn convinced Hall to take a stab again at acting, which he did. With a career spanning over thirty years, Davidson appeared in over 180 films. Max Everitt Rosenbloom (November 6, 1906 – March 6, 1976) was an American professional boxer, actor, and television personality.
