Kay Gray
Kay Gray was developed by the Wisconsin grape breeder Elmer Swenson c. 1980 and is named after a family friend. It is a seedling of Swenson's own ES 217 (a cross of Minnesota 78 and Golden Muscat). Swenson collected open-pollinated seeds from this vine, and one seedling eventually became Kay Gray. Because of this, the male parent is unknown, though Swenson suspected it might be a nearby vine of Onaka (grape), Onaka, an old South Dakota cultivar. Kay Gray itself is female and requires a pollen source in order to set fruit. In some environments it can produce an odd flavored wine that is vastly improved by modest levels of blending. Had it not been for its exceptional disease resistance and winter hardiness it probably would not have been selected. In subsequent years Swenson used this grape as a parent for the more conventionally flavored cultivars 'Louise Swenson' and 'Brianna (grape), Brianna'. Elmer Swenson
Elmer Swenson (12 December 1913 – 24 December 2004) was an American pioneering grape breeder who introduced a number of new cultivars, effectively revolutionizing grape growing in the Upper Midwest of the United States and other cold and short-seasoned regions. Biography Elmer Swenson worked on a farm near Osceola, Wisconsin which he had inherited from his maternal grandfather Larson, an immigrant from Sweden. Swenson began breeding grapes in 1943, starting a program of intercrossing French hybrid grapes with selections of the local wild species, ''Vitis riparia''. He was inspired by the work of Thomas Volney Munson, T.V. Munson, a Texas breeder who had documented the American grape species and heavily utilized them in his breeding. Minnesota 78
Minnesota 78 is a variety of grapevine, developed at the University of Minnesota. It was extensively used in breeding by Elmer Swenson, with its ''Vitis riparia'' background providing a degree of adaptation to the harsh climate of the upper Midwest. It has been recorded as a cross of Beta by Witt. However, many have doubted this pedigree, and Swenson suggested that the male parent may be Jessica, a cross of ''Vitis labrusca'' by a variety of '' Vitis aestivalis''. Onaka (grape)
Onaka is one of a number of hardy hybrid grape cultivars produced by the prolific breeder Nels Hansen at South Dakota State University. It is a product of a cross of Beta (a hybrid of ''Vitis labrusca'' and ''Vitis riparia'' known for its cold hardiness) and Salem (a ''Vitis labrusca'' x ''Vitis vinifera'' hybrid).
