Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (, KVIFF) is an annual film festival held in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The Karlovy Vary Festival is one of the oldest in the world and has become Central and Eastern Europe, Central and Eastern Europe's leading film event. History The pre-war dream of many enthusiastic filmmakers materialized in 1946 when a non-competition festival of films from seven countries took place in Mariánské Lázně and Karlovy Vary. Above all it was intended to screen the results of the recently nationalized Czechoslovakia, Czechoslovak film industry. After the first two years the festival moved permanently to Karlovy Vary. The Karlovy Vary IFF first held an international film competition in 1948. Since 1951, an international jury has evaluated the films. Velvet Revolution
The Velvet Revolution () or Gentle Revolution () was a non-violent transition of power in what was then Czechoslovakia, occurring from 17 November to 28 November 1989. Popular demonstrations against the one-party government of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia included students and older dissidents. The result was the end of Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, 41 years of one-party rule in Czechoslovakia, and the subsequent dismantling of the command economy and conversion to a parliamentary republic. On 17 November 1989 (International Students' Day), riot police suppressed a Student activism, student demonstration in Prague. Odesa International Film Festival
The Odesa International Film Festival () is an annual film festival held in the middle of July in Odesa. Since 2016 the festival program has consisted of three parts: the International competition, National competition and European Documentary competition. The National competition is divided into Features and Shorts. History The first Odesa International Film Festival was held from 16 to 24 July 2010. As part of the Festival, a competitive program of 16 feature films was shown. In total, more than 100 films were presented at the competitive and non-competitive screenings at the festival. Jiří Bartoška (24 March 1947 – 8 May 2025) was a Czech theatre, television, and film actor and president of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. His most notable film roles include performances in ''Sekal Has to Die'' (1998), '' All My Loved Ones'' (1999), and '' Tiger Theory'' (2016), as well as the television series '' Sanitka'' (1984) and '' Neviditelní'' (2014). The Grandhotel Pupp () is a 228-room luxury hotel in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. The hotel hosts the annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. History The hotel began as the ''Saxony Hall'', built in 1701 by Burgomaster Deiml. A later mayor, Becher, built a ''Lusthaus'' on a plot of land he owned at right-angles to the ''Saxony Hall''. This became known as the ''Bohemia Hall''. Jan Jiří Pop (), a confectioner, came to Karlovy Vary (that time known under its German name Karlsbad) in 1760 and worked for a local confectioner called Mitterbach.
