Kalgoorlie-Boulder (or just Kalgoorlie) is a city in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, located east-northeast of Perth at the end of the Great Eastern Highway. It is referred to as Kalgoorlie–Boulder as the surrounding urban area includes the historic townsite of Boulder and the local government area is the City of Kalgoorlie–Boulder. Kalgoorlie–Boulder lies on the traditional lands of the Wangkatja group of peoples. The name "Kalgoorlie" is derived from the Wangai word ''Karlkurla'' or ''Kulgooluh'', meaning "place of the silky pears". The city was established in 1893 during the Western Australian gold rushes. Mullingar is a locality in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. It is a suburb of Kalgoorlie–Boulder. At the 2016 census, Mullingar had a population of 305 people, down from 343 in 2011. Geography Mullingar is wedge-shaped, with its northern boundary an east-west line approximately north of the Kalgoorlie town centre. Its western boundary runs north-northwest along the Leonora branch line of Eastern Goldfields Railway, while the eastern boundary of the locality runs north-east, roughly parallel to (and briefly along) Yarri Road. Only a small area of Mullingar is residential, specifically the area south of the Goldfields Highway and adjacent to the suburbs of Lamington and Piccadilly (from which it is separated by the railway). Kanowna is a ghost town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, about east of Kalgoorlie. At the 2016 census, Kanowna had a population of 10 people. After the discovery of gold in the area in 1893, the townsite was gazetted in 1894. and the population grew from 2,500 in 1897 to over 12,500 by 1899. However, the alluvial gold supply was rapidly exhausted and underground mines following the outcropping vein produced decreasing amounts of gold, resulting in a slow but steady decrease in the population. The Eastern Goldfields is part of the Western Australian Goldfields in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, covering the present and former gold-mining area east of Perth. Extent and name origin The region encompasses the towns of Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Coolgardie, Kambalda, Southern Cross and other smaller settlements within this area.
