Kani (crab)
''Kani maranjandu'' is a species of tree crab first identified in 2017. ''K. maranjandu'' has, to date, only been observed in the forests of the Western Ghats in Kerala, India. , it is the only species in the genus ''Kani''. Taxonomy ''Kani maranjandu'' represents a newly discovered genus (''Kani''), named for the local Kani tribe. The species name maranjandu means tree crab in local language (Malayalam). The discoverers have placed the genus within the family Gecarcinucidae. Characteristics ''Kani maranjandu'' is distinguished from other crabs of the family Gecarcinidae by its distinctive carapace and the structure of the male abdomen, as well as its very long walking legs. The species is entirely arboreal, relying on water held in small hollows of trees for survival. Kani Tribe
Kani is a tribe living in the Western Ghats area of Kerala, India. Background Their use of the forest plant arogyapacha ('' Trichopus zeylanicus'') as a key ingredient in a herbal remedy called Jeevani was noted by visiting scientists in the 1980s. The Gecarcinidae, the land crabs, are a family of true crabs that are adapted for terrestrial existence. Similar to all other crabs, land crabs possess a series of gills. In addition, the part of the carapace covering the gills is inflated and equipped with blood vessels. These organs extract oxygen from the air, analogous to the vertebrate lungs.
