Kaleva – also known as Kalevi or Kalev – and his sons are important heroic figures in Estonian, Finnish and Karelian mythology. In the Finnish epic the ''Kalevala'', he is an ancient Finnish ruler. ''Kaleva'' is a Finnish language, Finnish subscription newspaper published in Oulu, Finland. History and profile ''Kaleva'' was founded in 1899 by Juho Raappana. The owner of the paper is Kaleva Oy and its publisher is Kaleva publishing house. The paper is based in Oulu and is published in broadsheet format. Although ''Kaleva'' has a neutral stance and no political affiliation, the paper supported the Progress Party until 1953. Since 2015 Kyösti Karvonen has been serving as the editor-in-chief of ''Kaleva''. Kaleva Church
Kaleva Church (; ) is an Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland church building in the Liisankallio district of Tampere, Finland. It was designed by Reima and Raili Pietilä and built in 1964–66. The church accommodates approximately 1,120 people. It is considered an example of modern architectural style and is one of the main sights of Tampere. History Kaleva parish was established in 1953, but without its own church. In 1959, the board of the Evangelical Lutheran Churches in Tampere announced a competition to design a church building for the parish. The entry selected was by architect Reima Pietilä, whose architectural partner (and, from 1963, wife) Raili Paatelainen later became involved in the project. The site chosen for the church was a small hill at the head of the convergence of two of Tampere's major streets: Teiskontie and Sammonkatu. Kaleva (airplane)
''Kaleva'' was a civilian Junkers Ju 52 passenger airplane belonging to the Finnish carrier Aero O/Y. On 14 June 1940, as Flight 1631 from Tallinn in Estonia to Helsinki in Finland, it was shot down over the Gulf of Finland by two combat aircraft of the Soviet military and downed near the Estonian island of Keri, killing all nine on board. The incident occurred during the Interim Peace between the Soviet Union and Finland, and at the outset of the Soviet occupation of Estonia. The airplane's wreck was found on 5 June 2024 by Estonian unmanned underwater vehicles near the Keri lighthouse in Estonian territorial waters. The wreck is located at a depth of 71 to 76 meters. Kaleva, Michigan
Kaleva ( ) is a village in Manistee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 507 at the 2020 census. History Kaleva was founded in 1900 and became a refuge for Finnish settlers. The name of the village comes from the ''Kalevala'', the national epic of Finland. There are two Michigan historical markers in the town. The historic John J. Makinen Bottle House is one, and Kaleva itself is the subject of the second. Geography Kaleva is in central Manistee County, within Maple Grove Township. It is part of the region of Northern Michigan. Manistee, the county seat, is to the southwest, while Cadillac is to the east-southeast. An abandoned C&O Railroad line from Manistee to Traverse City passes through the village. There are no railroad tracks remaining. Kaleva is an eastern part of the city of Tampere, Finland, located south of the Kauppi district. It is part of larger Sampo district. The population of Kaleva is approximately 10,000 (2005). The most notable landmark is the Kaleva Church built between 1959 and 1966, and located in the Liisankallio district. Kaleva has many educational institutions, the folk high school Sampola and vocational school of economics, two high schools (lukio); Kalevan lukio and Sammon keskuslukio, and two comprehensive schools.
