Justin Verlander
Justin Brooks Verlander ( ; born February 20, 1983) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, and New York Mets. A three-time Cy Young Award winner as well as an American League (AL) Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player, Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award recipient, Verlander is considered to be one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. Born in Manakin Sabot, Virginia, Verlander attended Old Dominion University (ODU) and played college baseball for the Old Dominion Monarchs baseball, Monarchs. He broke the Monarchs' and Coastal Athletic Association, Colonial Athletic Association's career records for strikeouts. 2003 Pan American Games
The 2003 Pan American Games, officially the XIV Pan American Games () and commonly known as Santo Domingo 2003, were held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from August 1 to 17, 2003. The successful bid for the Games was made in the mid-1990s, when Dominican Republic had one of the highest growth rates in Latin America. All 42 Pan American Sports Organization, PASO countries and over 5,223 athletes pre-registered for participation in the XIV Pan American Games. An additional 2,425 trainers and delegates attended. The baseball tournament at the Pan American Games has long been considered to be one of the premier international baseball events in the world, even higher than the Olympic Games. This is because the level of competition is higher than in the Olympics, where only two teams from the Americas traditionally were permitted to qualify. Cuba has dominated the tournament since its inception. Cubans field their strongest players, while the Americans sent college players, as the schedule does not allow MLB players to participate. In 2013, a women's tournament was added to the program, effective with the 2015 Games. A total of seven men and five women's teams competed in each tournament respectively.
