Julián Acosta
Julio "Julian" Acosta (12 August 1916 – 30 August 1983) was a minor league baseball player who won 96 games as a pitcher, collected at least 749 hits as a batter and spent time at first base and in the outfield. He also spent several years pitching in Cuba and was a manager for a couple of seasons. He began his career as a pitcher, moving to the field later on. In his first professional season, 1940, he went 13-10 with a 4.12 ERA in 38 games for the Goldsboro Goldbugs and Mayodan Millers. With the Goldbugs the next year, he went 17-17 with a 3.10 ERA in 40 games, leading the teams in wins, losses, appearances, innings pitched (276), hits allowed (273), runs (120) and earned runs (95). No other pitcher threw more than 177 innings or won more than 12 games ( Jake Wade accomplished both). Marianao
Marianao is one of the 15 municipalities or boroughs (''municipios'' in Spanish) in the city of Havana, Cuba. It lies 6 miles southwest of the original city of Havana, with which it is connected by the Marianao railway. In 2022 the municipality had a population of 134,057. Decatur Commodores
The Decatur Commodores were a professional minor league baseball team based in Decatur, Illinois that played for 64 seasons. The Commodores are the primary ancestor of today's Kane County Cougars. They played, with sporadic interruptions, from 1900 to 1974 in a variety of minor leagues, but spent the majority of their existence in the Illinois–Indiana–Iowa League (the "Three-I" League), later joining the Mississippi–Ohio Valley League (1952–1955) and the Midwest League (1956–1974). The American Series (, "American Season") was the name given to the exhibition baseball games played between Cuban and American teams in Cuba. Before the Cuban Revolution, American teams would regularly travel to Cuba and play various professional, all-star and/or amateur Cuban teams throughout the country. The series usually took place either in the fall, after the end of the American season, or during spring training before the season began. The first American Series took place in , with then minor league Worcester team going 2–0 against its Cuban opponents. Cuban Winter League
The Cuban League (Spanish: ''Liga cubana'') was one of the earliest and longest lasting professional baseball leagues outside the United States, operating in Cuba from 1878 to 1961. The schedule usually operated during the winter months, so the league was sometimes known as the "Cuban Winter League." The league generally comprised 3 to 5 teams, and was centered in Havana, though it sometimes included teams from outlying cities such as Matanzas or Santa Clara. Despite its name, it was not the only professional league active in Cuba during that time, nor was it always the most popular; Peter C. Lou Haneles
Louis Aaron Haneles (September 15, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois – November 29, 2006 in Miami, Florida) was a minor league baseball player, manager, general manager and owner. Haneles began his professional career in 1936, at the age of 19. He played from 1936 to 1938, in 1940, 1946 and 1949. In total, he appeared in 322 games, hitting .256 with 230 hits in 900 at-bats. He mostly played as a left-handed catcher and always promoted the better suitability of left-handers for the catcher position. He took his first managing job in 1940, heading the Shelby Colonels before being replaced by Art Patchin. Jacob Fields Wade (April 1, 1912 – February 1, 2006) was an American professional baseball pitcher who appeared in Major League Baseball for the Detroit Tigers (1936–1938), Boston Red Sox (1939), St. Louis Browns (1939), Chicago White Sox (1942–1944), New York Yankees (1946) and Washington Senators (1946).
