Juan De Dios Alfonso
Juan de Dios Alfonso Armenteros (San José de Las Lajas, 1825 – Guanabacoa, 29 June 1877), was a black Culture of Cuba, Cuban band leader, composer and clarinetist. He founded the small orchestra ''Early Cuban bands#Orchesta Flor de Cuba, Flor de Cuba'', which played at dances and in theatres in the middle 19th century in Havana. In Havana, Alfonso played clarinet in Feliciano Ramos's band ''La Unión'' in 1856, and directed ''Las Almendares'' in 1859. It is not known precisely when he formed ''La Flor de Cuba'', but it must have been in the 1860s. It became one of the most popular bands in the middle to late 19th century. San José De Las Lajas
San José de las Lajas is a municipality and the capital city of the newly formed Mayabeque Province of Cuba, after the segmentation of La Habana Province in 2011. It is located in the center north of the province, and is bisected by the Carretera Central. It was founded in 1778. Carlos Manuel De Céspedes
Carlos Manuel de Céspedes del Castillo (18 April 1819, Bayamo, Spanish Cuba – 27 February 1874, San Lorenzo, Spanish Cuba) was a Cuban revolutionary hero and First President of Cuba in Arms in 1868. Cespedes, who was a plantation owner in Cuba, freed his slaves and made the declaration of Cuban independence in 1868 which started the Ten Years' War (1868–1878). This was the first of three wars of independence, the third of which, the Cuban War of Independence led to the end of Spanish rule in 1898 and Cuba's independence in 1902. Because of his actions which led to the eventual independence of Cuba, he is known there as the "Father of the Fatherland". Ten Years' War Céspedes was a landowner and lawyer in eastern Cuba, near Bayamo, who purchased '' La Demajagua'', an estate with a sugar plantation, in 1844 after returning from Spain. Raimundo Valenzuela
Raimundo Valenzuela de Leon (23 January 1848 in San Antonio de los Baños – 27 April 1905 in Havana) was a leading Cuban trombonist, composer and bandleader. Life & career Valenzuela studied music under his father, Lucas: he learnt piano, viola, percussion, but was first employed by '' Orquesta Flor de Cuba'' as a trombonist. He was playing for ''La Flor'' in the Alhambra theatre in Havana in 1869, when a group of Spanish anti-revolutionary volunteers attacked the theatre and its patrons. That night the theatre had been performing anti-colonial works for the benefit of rebels declaring Cuban independence, in what became known as the Ten Years' War. He established his band from the remains of Flor de Cuba after the death of its leader, Juan de Dios Alfonso. Ten Years' War
The Ten Years' War ( es, Guerra de los Diez Años; 1868–1878), also known as the Great War () and the War of '68, was part of Cuba's fight for independence from Spain. The uprising was led by Cuban-born planters and other wealthy natives. On 10 October 1868, sugar mill owner Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and his followers proclaimed independence, beginning the conflict. This was the first of three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain, the other two being the Little War (1879–1880) and the Cuban War of Independence (1895–1898).
