Joseph Martin, Jr. (1740–1808) was a brigadier general in the Virginia militia during the American Revolutionary War, in which Martin's frontier diplomacy with the Cherokee, Cherokee people is credited with not only averting Indian attacks on the Scotch-Irish American and English American settlers who helped win the battles of Battle of Kings Mountain, Kings Mountain and Battle of Cowpens, Cowpens, but with also helping to keep the Indians' position neutral and from siding with the British troops during those crucial battles. Historians agree that the settlers' success at these two battles signaled the turning of the tide of the Revolutionary War—in favor of the Americans. Joseph Ber Soloveitchik ( ''Yosef Dov ha-Levi Soloveychik''; February 27, 1903 – April 9, 1993) was a major United States, American Orthodox Judaism, Orthodox rabbi, Talmudist, and modern Jewish philosophy, Jewish philosopher. He was a scion of the Lithuanian Jews, Lithuanian Jewish Brisk yeshivas, Soloveitchik rabbinic dynasty. As a ''rosh yeshiva'' of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS) at Yeshiva University in New York City, The Rav, as he was known, Semicha, ordained close to 2,000 rabbis over the course of almost half a century. Lock Martin
Joseph Lockard "Lock" Martin Jr. (October 12, 1916 – January 19, 1959) was an American performer afflicted with gigantism. Martin and a twin brother were born in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his brother died in childbirth. Martin would eventually grow to over 7 feet tall by adulthood, though his exact height was reported inconsistently. He became notable for appearing as the robot Gort in ''The Day the Earth Stood Still'' (1951). Despite his size, he had difficulty moving in the heavy robot suit, and during scenes in which he was supposed to lift and carry either Patricia Neal or Michael Rennie, they were either held up by wires, or replaced with lightweight dummies. Martin traveled with Spike Jones and His City Slickers and appeared on their television show in the early 1950s. He also worked as a doorman at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. The Mount Rennie rape case is the only gang rape in Sydney, Australia, in the 1880s that led to a full conviction of at least some of the participants involved in the crime—young larrikins of the "Waterloo Push". The attack is sometimes referred to as the "Mount Rennie Outrage" or the "Waterloo Outrage". Joseph Martin (fl. 1788–c.1819) was an Enlightenment gardener-botanist and plant collector who worked at the Jardin du Roi in Paris. He was sent on collecting expeditions to the Isle de France (now Mauritius), Madagascar, Cape of Good Hope and Caribbean. Gardener-botanists in the Enlightenment During the Enlightenment, both France and England organised elaborate programs of plant introduction to explore the potential of plants not only as food for their colonies but as botanical novelties of all kinds. Joseph Charles Martin, SS (October 12, 1924 – March 9, 2009) was an American Catholic priest, recovered alcoholic and renowned speaker and educator on the issues of alcoholism and drug addiction. He was a member of the Sulpicians. Background Martin attended St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School from 1930 to 1938, then completed four years of secondary education at Loyola High School.
