Joseph Bennett (billiards Player)
Joseph Bennett was an English champion player of English billiards. He was the billiards champion three times when it was played on a challenge basis. Biography Bennett was born in 1842 in Town Malling, Kent, and played his first billiards match aged 22. In November 1870, Bennett played John Roberts Jr. for the Billiards Championship and £200, and won the title with the scoreline 1,000-905. The match was watched by over 300 spectators. Roberts beat Bennett 1,000-637 the following year, in January 1871, to regain the title. Bennett made a further unsuccessful title challenge in November 1871, losing 942–1,000 to William Cook, but won the title again in November 1880, beating Cook 1,000-949. Bennett successfully defended the title in January 1881, beating Tom Taylor 1,000-910. During the match against Taylor, Bennett set a new championship record of 125. Joseph Bennett (British Politician)
Joseph Bennett (1829 – 1 January 1908) was an English merchant and Liberal politician. Bennett was born at Grimsby, the son of William Bennett and his wife Ann. He was educated at Wesley College, Sheffield and became a merchant at Louth. He was a J.P. for Lindsey Division of Lincolnshire, and for the Boroughs of Louth and Grimsby In the 1885 general election, Bennett was elected Member of Parliament for Gainsborough but lost the seat in the 1886 general election. He regained the seat in the 1892 general election but stood down from the House of Commons at the 1895 general election. Bennett lived at Louth and died at the age of 78. Joseph Henry Bennett (28 February 1881 – 29 August 1947) was a cricketer who played first-class cricket for Canterbury from 1898 to 1920, and played several times for New Zealand in the days before New Zealand played Test cricket. Cricket career 1898 to 1910 A medium-pace bowler, Joe Bennett made his first-class debut for Canterbury at the age of 17 in 1898–99, but did not establish himself in the side until 1904–05. In the first match of the 1904–05 season, against Wellington, he took 6 for 44 and 4 for 35 to help Canterbury to a 201-run victory. In the next match a few days later he took 4 for 58 and 5 for 10 against Otago. He was selected for the two matches New Zealand played against Australia later that season, but took only the wickets of Victor Trumper and Clem Hill at a cost of 156 runs from 33 overs. Joseph Bennett (29 November 1831 – 12 June 1911) was an English music critic and librettist. After an early career as a schoolmaster and organist, he was engaged as a music critic by ''The Sunday Times'' in 1865. Within five years he was appointed chief music critic of ''The Daily Telegraph'', a post he held from 1870 to 1906. Among Bennett's other work was writing or adapting libretti for cantatas and other large-scale orchestral and choral works by British composers such as Arthur Sullivan, Frederic Cowen and Alexander Mackenzie. Joseph Bray Bennett (February 23, 1833August 17, 1913) was an English American immigrant, machine manufacturer, and Republican politician. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate, representing Jefferson County during the 1879 and 1880 sessions. He worked much of the rest of his life as a clerk in the United States Department of Agriculture. Biography Joseph Bray Bennett was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, in February 1833.
