John Symes (cricketer)
John Symes (11 January 1879 – 23 September 1944) was a member of the gold medal–winning Great Britain Olympic cricket team at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris, France. Personal life Symes was born 11 January 1879 in Crediton, Devon. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth's School, Crediton, and Blundell's School in Tiverton. He worked as a solicitor in Crediton and eventually took over his father's practice. He was also clerk to Creditor Urban District Council for more than forty years. He served in the First World War in the 6th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, and was awarded the OBE in 1919 for his service. He died of a heart attack while out shooting on a local farm in Crediton on 23 September 1944; he was 65. John Symes, Esq. (4 March 1573 – 29 October 1661), was a Member of Parliament (MP) from Somerset, High Sheriff, and Justice of the Peace in 17th Century England. Symes was a Royalist during the English Civil War, and appointed to numerous commissions during the reign of Charles I. Early life and education John Symes was born on 4 March 1573 in Somerset, England, to William Symes (1544–1597), a successful merchant and landowner, and Elizabeth Hill, daughter of Robert Hill of Taunton. The Symes family achieved recognition in 1591 when William Symes, his father, was granted arms by James I: "''Azure, three escallops in pale or''". It is unclear whether John or his father were knighted. John was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1588 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1591. John Symes Berkeley
John Symes Berkeley (1663–1736) of Stoke Gifford near Bristol was an English Member of Parliament. Life He was the second son of Richard Berkeley (d. 1671) of Stoke Gifford and Jane, daughter of Henry Symes of Frampton Cotterell, Gloucestershire. His grandfather and great-grandfather had both sat in parliament for Gloucestershire before the English Civil War. He inherited the family estates on the death of his elder brother George in 1685. This included Stoke Park, where he later exploited the rich coal deposits beneath the estate and commissioned Sir James Thornhill to rebuild a summerhouse at the end of the terrace of Stoke Park House as an orangery. He was twice elected to represent the constituency of Gloucestershire in the Parliament between 1710 and 1715. He died at Bath in 1736 and was buried at Stoke Gifford. John Foster Symes
John Foster Symes (February 10, 1878 – April 5, 1951) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. Education and career Born in Denver, Colorado, Symes received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree from Yale University in 1900 and a Bachelor of Laws from Columbia Law School in 1903. He was in private practice in New York City, New York from 1902 to 1906, and in Denver from 1906 to 1921. His practice was interrupted by service in the United States Army during World War I from 1917 to 1919, where he achieved the rank of Major. He was the United States Attorney for the District of Colorado from 1921 to 1922. Federal judicial service On April 22, 1922, Symes was nominated by President Warren G. Harding to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Colorado vacated by Judge Robert E. Lewis.
