John Ross House (Rossville, Georgia)
The John Ross House is a historic house at Lake Avenue and Spring Street in Rossville, Georgia. It was the home of the long-serving Cherokee Nation leader John Ross from 1830 to 1838, after his lands and fine home near the Coosa River had been taken by the state. Ross (1790-1866) led the Cherokee for many years, notably opposing the Cherokee Removal, which he was unable to stop. His house was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. and Description and history The John Ross House is located near Rossville's downtown, on the south side of a lane joining Andrew Street and East Lake Avenue. Its location is not original; it was moved a short distance, from a more central downtown location, in the 1960s. The house is a two-story log structure with a dogtrot plan, consisting of two log pens flanking a first-floor breezeway, all covered by a low-pitch wood shingle gable roof. John Ross House, also known as Old Matt's Cabin, is a historic home located at the Shepherd of the Hills farm near Branson, Taney County, Missouri. The original section was built in the mid-1880s or mid-1890s, as a single cell log structure. It was subsequently enlarged with frame additions through 1910. It features a stone exterior end chimney. (includes 17 photographs) It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is named after "John Ross" (real name, Charles Rawden Maclean), who at the age of 15 walked from Port Natal to Delagoa Bay and back to procure medicine and supplies. His statue stands outside the building. On top of the tower is the Roma Revolving Restaurant. The building is 109 metres (358 feet) high and was renovated in 2009.
