John Philip Kemble As Cato
''John Philip Kemble as Cato'' is an 1812 portrait by the English artist Thomas Lawrence of the actor John Philip Kemble. Part of the Kemble dynasty he was, along with his sister Sarah Siddons, one of the most celebrated actors of the period. Lawrence had established himself as the leading portrait painter of the Regency era and had previously painted Kemble as Hamlet in 1801. Kemble is shown in the role of Cato from Joseph Addison's 1713 play ''Cato, a Tragedy''. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. Thomas Lawrence
Sir Thomas Lawrence (13 April 1769 – 7 January 1830) was an English people, English portrait painter and the fourth president of the Royal Academy. A child prodigy, he was born in Bristol and began drawing in Devizes, where his father was an innkeeper at the Bear Hotel, Devizes, Bear Hotel in the Market Place, Devizes, Market Square. At age ten, having moved to Bath, he was supporting his family with his pastel portraits. At 18, he went to London and soon established his reputation as a portrait painter in oil paint, oils, receiving his first royal commission, Portrait of Queen Charlotte (Lawrence), a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1789. He stayed at the top of his profession until his death, aged 60, in 1830. Self-taught, he was a brilliant draughtsman and known for his gift of capturing a likeness, as well as his virtuoso handling of paint. ''Portrait of Sarah Siddons'' is an 1804 portrait painting by the English artist Thomas Lawrence depicting the actress Sarah Siddons. Siddons was the leading tragedienne of the early Regency era. She was a member of the Kemble family of actors, that included her brothers John Philip Kemble and Charles Kemble. Lawrence was romantically involved with two of her daughters and had known her since his days as a child prodigy in Bath, Somerset, Bath. Lawrence depicts Siddons in full-length during a dramatic reading. She is shown with volumes of plays by Thomas Otway and William Shakespeare. The painting was acquired for the nation in 1847 and is today in the collection of Tate Britain in London. William Beechey
Sir William Beechey (12 December 175328 January 1839) was a British portraitist during the golden age of British painting. Early life Beechey was born at Burford, Oxfordshire, on 12 December 1753, the son of William Beechey, a solicitor, and his wife Hannah Read. Both parents died when he was still quite young in the early 1760s, and he and his siblings were brought up by his uncle Samuel, a solicitor who lived in nearby Chipping Norton. The uncle was determined that the young Beechey should likewise follow a career in the law, and at an appropriate age he was entered as a clerk with a conveyancer near Stow-on-the-Wold. But as '' The Monthly Mirror'' later recorded in July 1798, he was: "Early foredoomed his ncle'ssoul to cross/ And paint a picture where he should engross". ''Portrait of John Philip Kemble'' is a 1799 portrait painting by the British artist William Beechey depicting the stage actor John Philip Kemble. Kemble came from a celebrated family of actors and earned fame in London's West End, often appearing alongside his sister Sarah Siddons. He was at the height of his fame when he sat for William Beechey, a leading portraitist and prominent member of the Royal Academy. The painting was commissioned by the French art dealer Noël Desenfans. Unlike most depictions of Kemble which show him in the character of one of the various roles he played, Beechey's portrait depicts the actor as himself. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy's 1799 Summer Exhibition at Somerset House. The painting is now in the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London having been part of the 1811 bequest by Francis Bourgeois. ''John Philip Kemble as Coriolanus'' is a 1798 portrait painting by the English artist Thomas Lawrence depicting the British actor John Philip Kemble appearing in the role of ''Coriolanus'' in the William Shakespeare tragedy of the same title. Kemble was the leading male actor of the era, frequently appearing alongside his sister Sarah Siddons in London's West End. Having first appeared in the part in 1789, it became one of Kemble's greatest roles. It portrays Coriolanus banished from Rome and plotting his revenge. Francis Bourgeois had previously produced the same scene and exhibited it in 1797.
