John Laing (bishop)
John Laing was a 15th-century bishop of Glasgow, Scotland. He was from the family of "Redhouse" in the shire of Edinburgh. Before becoming bishop he was rector of Tannadice in Angus, vicar of Linlithgow, and was rector of Newlands in the diocese of Glasgow when he was appointed to the see in 1474. In 1476 he founded the Franciscan Monastery or 'Greyfriars' of Glasgow in conjunction with Thomas Forsyth, Rector of Glasgow. John Laing (bibliographer)
John Laing (1809 – 3 April 1880) was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland, known as a bibliographer. Life He was born in Edinburgh, but spent his early youth at Dalmeny, where his father was for factor to the Earl of Rosebery; his mother was Mary Fyfe, of a Banffshire family. After taking the course at Edinburgh University in arts and theology, he was, in 1842, ordained assistant and successor to John M. Robertson, minister of Livingston, Linlithgowshire. At the disruption of 1843 he withdrew from the establishment, joined the newly formed Free Church, and for a time continued his ministry in the same parish. On 29 August 1843, he married at Livingston, Catherine Fyfe, daughter of a West India proprietor, and had three daughters, the eldest of whom predeceased him. In 1846 Laing became chaplain to the Presbyterian soldiers at Gibraltar and afterwards at Malta. Failing health, together with a reluctance to appear in public, caused him to resign his charge. Sir John William Laing (24 September 1879 – 11 January 1978) was a British entrepreneur in the construction industry. He inherited his father's building business – which is now known as John Laing Group – in the early 1900s. Background Laing was born in Carlisle to John Laing and Sarah Wood. Maurice Laing
Sir John Maurice Laing (1 February 1918 – 22 February 2008) was a senior executive of British construction company John Laing. He was the first president of the Confederation of British Industry in 1965–66. Early life Laing was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, the younger son of John Laing. The family were strict Christian Brethren. Laing's father had been running the family construction firm, John Laing & Son, since 1910, and Laing worked for the firm in his school holidays. The headquarters of the business moved from Carlisle to Mill Hill in 1926, and Laing was educated at St Lawrence College, Ramsgate. In 1935, aged 17, he began to work full-time with his father at the family firm. Meanwhile, his elder brother, William Kirby Laing, studied engineering at Cambridge University.
