John Killick (Australian Criminal)
John Killick (born 1942), is an Australian criminal and author. He is best known for escaping from Sydney's Silverwater Correctional Complex with his partner by helicopter on 25 March 1999. Background Killick has spent more than 30 years in jail, first going to jail in 1960. He started robbing banks in Sydney in 1966 to pay gambling debts, becoming Australia's first decimal currency bank robber when he held up the Canley Heights ANZ bank on 14 February. In what was called the "Perfect Alibi case", Killick was convicted of a bank robbery in Adelaide on the same day he was reporting to a police station in Sydney as part of his bail conditions. On 25 March 1999, Killick's then-girlfriend Lucy Dudko, armed with an inoperable Thompson submachine gun, hijacked a helicopter which was conducting a tour of the Olympic Park site in the lead up to the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. The single was the first to feature a music video by the artist in three years, and tells the story of John Killick's escape from Silverwater Prison in Sydney with the assistance of his girlfriend Lucy Dudko. There have been multiple prison escapes where an inmate escapes by means of a helicopter. One of the earliest instances was the escape of Joel David Kaplan, nicknamed "Man Fan", on August 19, 1971, from the Santa Martha Acatitla in Mexico. Kaplan was a New York businessman who not only escaped the prison but eventually got out of Mexico and went on to write a book about his experience, ''The 10-Second Jailbreak''. France has had more recorded helicopter escape attempts than any other country, with at least 11. One of the most notable French jail breaks occurred in 1986, when the wife of bank robber Michel Vaujour studied for months to learn how to fly a helicopter. Using her newly acquired skills, she rented a white helicopter and flew low over Paris to pluck her husband off the roof of his fortress prison.
