John Hogan (sculptor)
John Hogan (14 October 1800 – 27 March 1858) was a sculptor from Tallow, County Waterford, Tallow, County Waterford in Ireland. Described in some sources as the "greatest of Irish sculptors", according to the Dictionary of Irish Biography he was responsible for "much of the most significant religious sculpture in Ireland" during the 19th century. Working primarily from Rome, among his best known works are three versions of ''The Dead Christ'', commissioned for churches in Dublin, Cork, and the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Newfoundland, Canada. John Vincent Lawless Hogan (February 14, 1890 – December 29, 1960), often John V. L. Hogan, was a noted American radio pioneer. Hogan was born in Philadelphia, constructed his first amateur wireless station in 1902, began his career in 1906 as a laboratory assistant to Lee de Forest, and in 1907 participated in the first public demonstration of the audion tube (triode). From 1908 to 1910 he attended Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University, leaving without a degree to join Reginald Fessenden's National Electric Signaling Co. (NESCO) at Brant Rock, Massachusetts, where he served as a telegraph operator. While working at NESCO and its successors, Hogan helped develop Fessenden's first crystal detector patent (1910), a patent on single-control tuning (1912), and in 1913 discovered the "rectifier heterodyne" which increased radio receiver sensitivity by a factor of 100. As the chief financial backer of McLaren Racing and, subsequently, Scuderia Ferrari, he helped grow Formula One into a global competition with nine-figure team budgets. John Hogan VC (8 April 1884 – 6 October 1943) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth forces. Hogan was born in Royton, Royton, Lancashire, England. On 2 January 1915 Hogan married a widow, Margaret Taylor, at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Shaw Street, Oldham. Hogan was 30 years old, and a sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, The Manchester Regiment, British Army, during the World War I, First World War. On 29 October 1914 near Festubert, France, he performed a deed along with Second Lieutenant James Leach (VC), James Leach for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. John "Jack" Hogan (1 January 1881 – 15 November 1945) was a New Zealand rugby football player who represented New Zealand in both rugby union and rugby league as well as being a national champion in water polo. Early life Hogan was born in Wanganui in 1881. He received his education at the Wanganui Marist Brothers' School. He was an all-round athlete and rowed for the Aramoho Rowing Club. Rugby union career Hogan was a Wing Forward who played rugby union for the Kaierau club before being first selected to represent Wanganui in 1903. He also played water polo and was part of the Wanganui team which won the 1905 national title. In 1907 Hogan was selected for the All Blacks side that toured Australia. John Forbes Hogan (January 7, 1894 – February 16, 1967) was an American architect from Providence, Rhode Island. Hogan was born to Mary Josephine Forbes and Thomas Sebastian Hogan in Pawtucket, RI, Pawtucket in 1894. In 1916 he earned a Bachelor of Science, B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an Master of Science, M.S. the following year. For 10 months after his latter graduation he traveled in Europe. From 1919 to 1923 he was employed as a designer in the Providence office of architect George Frederic Hall. Bishop John Joseph Hogan (May 10, 1829 – February 21, 1913) was an Irish-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the first Bishop of the Diocese of Saint Joseph in Missouri (1868 to 1880) and the first bishop of the Diocese of Kansas City in Missouri (1880 to 1913). Biography Hogan was born on May 10, 1829, in Bruff, County Limerick, Ireland, and immigrated to the United States in 1847. He settled in St. Louis, Missouri, where he attended seminary, and was ordained priest of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis on April 10, 1852.
