John Hanlon (record Producer)
John Hanlon is an American record producer and recording engineer. Career He is best known for producing, engineering, and mixing albums for Neil Young, Stephen Stills, T-Bone Burnett, R.E.M, Gillian Welch, Dennis Wilson, and The Beach Boys. Work with Neil Young His relationship with Neil Young started in 1983, when he and David Briggs (producer), David Briggs, Young's longtime producer, were working on Trans (album), ''Trans'' remixes. Hanlon joined Briggs again in 1990, engineering and mixing Neil Young and Crazy Horse's album ''Ragged Glory''. He has been working with Young ever since. Recording style In an October 2012 interview with Mix (magazine), ''Mix'' magazine, John Hanlon described his recording style: "To me, some of the greatest records are the ones done with the fewest amount of microphones. ''The Monsanto Years'' is the 37th studio album by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Neil Young and the American rock group Promise of the Real, released on June 29, 2015 on Reprise Records. A concept album which criticizes the agribusiness company Monsanto, it is Young's thirty-fifth studio album and the third by Promise of the Real. The album is the first collaboration between Young and Promise of the Real. The group is fronted by Lukas Nelson and features his brother Micah, both sons of Willie Nelson. The album was produced by both Young and John Hanlon, and is accompanied by a film documenting the recording process. ''Storefront Hitchcock'' is a 1998 American concert film featuring Robyn Hitchcock and directed by Jonathan Demme. It was conceived as "a document not a documentary", and the performance was shot in New York City in December 1996, in an abandoned used clothing store on 14th Street. Over the course of the performance, simple props and set pieces are varied, such as a bare lightbulb and a tomato sculpture, and occasionally a passerby on the street glances in. Demme met Hitchcock after he attended a live show and offered to direct a live performance video for a song, which was then revised to be a full concert. Demme was inspired to film in the storefront setting by a Hungarian theatre group, Squat Theatre, who operated in New York City in the 1970s and 80s and typically performed in a storefront against a large plate glass window facing the street. Those Bastard Souls were an American independent rock band formed in 1995 as a solo side project by David Shouse of The Grifters. The name, somewhat of a nod to These Immortal Souls, was one that David Shouse coined as a replacement for A Band Called Bud, the original name of the Grifters. Shouse liked the name and held onto it, imagining a rotating roster of transient "bastard musicians" that would comprise a musical project that he might lead sometime in the future. While recording the Grifters' first album for Sub Pop, '' Ain't My Lookout'', Shouse was approached by someone from Darla Records with some DAT tapes and told that they would put out a solo album for him if he were interested. ''Are You Passionate?'' is the 26th studio album by Canadian / American musician Neil Young, his only album to feature Booker T. & the M.G.'s, and his 9th with Crazy Horse, released on April 9, 2002 as a double LP and as a single CD. The album represents Young's foray into soul music, one of many explorations into different genres during his career. Exceptions are rocker "Goin' Home", recorded with Crazy Horse, and the brooding "Let's Roll", a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The album ends with "She's a Healer", an extended jam. ''Just Roll Tape: April 26, 1968'' is a Stephen Stills demo album released in 2007. In the sleeve notes to the CD, Stephen Stills recalls that he was present at a Judy Collins session in New York in 1968, and when she finished with studio time remaining, Stills paid the engineer privately to let him record song demos. But Stills left the tapes in the studio and eventually considered them lost. When the studio was about to close in 1978, musician Joe Colasurdo, who was rehearsing there, was told by the owner that he could take away any tapes he wanted to before they cleared the place out. After seeing Stills' names on several of the boxes, Colasurdo kept them safe until he could find a reel-to-reel machine to play them on. Colasurdo began attempting to get the masters safely back into Stills's hands, an undertaking that took 25 years. When released in August 1977, it was warmly received critically, and noted for outselling the Beach Boys' contemporary efforts.
