Knights Grand Cross Of The Order Of The Bath
The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by King George I on 18 May 1725. Recipients of the Order are usually senior military officers or senior civil servants, and the monarch awards it on the advice of His Majesty's Government. The name derives from an elaborate medieval ceremony for preparing a candidate to receive his knighthood, of which ritual bathing (as a symbol of purification) was an element. While not all knights went through such an elaborate ceremony, knights so created were known as "knights of the Bath". George I constituted the Knights of the Bath as a regular military order. General Sir William Gerald Hugh Beach, (20 May 1923 – 4 September 2019) was a British Army officer who, in retirement, researched and advised on defence policy, arms control and disarmament, with an interest in promoting concerns about ethical issues of peace and war. Early life Beach was educated at Winchester College, Peterhouse, Cambridge (MA 1961) and the University of Edinburgh (MSc 1971). Military career Beach joined the Corps of Royal Engineers in August 1941. He saw active service in France and Belgium in 1944 and in Java in 1946. In Normandy he was ordered to clear a road of mines, but the first vehicle to use the road struck an undetected mine and was destroyed. He cleared the road again and rode on the next vehicle to use the road. In the North of France he was attached to the 11th Hussars. General Sir John Noel Thomas KCB DSO MC (28 February 1915 – 16 March 1983) was a Master-General of the Ordnance. Military career Thomas was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1936. He served in World War II latterly as Commander Royal Engineers for the Guards Armoured Division in North West Europe. He was appointed General Officer Commanding 42nd (Lancashire) Division/District of the Territorial Army in 1963 and then became Director of Combat Development (Army) at the Ministry of Defence in 1965. Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter de Lacy Le Cheminant, (17 June 1920 – 8 April 2018) was a senior commander of the Royal Air Force (RAF), who served as Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff from 1974 to 1976 and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces Central Europe from 1976 until his retirement in 1979. John Barraclough (RAF Officer)
Air Chief Marshal Sir John Barraclough (2 May 1918 – 10 May 2008) was a Royal Air Force pilot during the Second World War who went on to become Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff. Early life Barraclough was born on 2 May 1918. He was educated at Cranbrook School, in Cranbrook, Kent. Military career Barraclough joined the Artists Rifles in 1935. He was commissioned into the Royal Air Force in 1938. Barraclough served in the Second World War flying maritime patrol aircraft. On 29 October 1940, it was gazetted that he was promoted to flying officer on 3 September 1940. However, on 14 January 1941, this was substituted for the granting of the war substantive rank of flying officer back dated to 12 August 1940. He was promoted to war substantive flight lieutenant on 12 August 1941. By February 1943, he was an acting squadron leader and flying with No. 209 Squadron RAF which was stationed in East Africa.
