John Cook (speedway Rider)
John Kenneth Cook (born December 18, 1958, in Van Nuys, California) is an American former international motorcycle speedway rider. He was represented the USA national speedway team, USA in three Speedway World Team Cup, World Team Cup finals and earned 49 caps for the United States national speedway team. Career Cook is mainly remembered for his spell at the Ipswich Witches teams from 1981 to 1982 and from 1984 to 1986 where he walked out on the club mid-season on both occasions. Cook first rode in Britain for the Hull Vikings, when he competed in the 1980 British League season. His first spell at Ipswich began the following season in 1981 after a record £35,000 deal which included fellow American Dennis Sigalos. The pair helped the Witches win the Knockout Cup (speedway), Knockout Cup. In August 1982 he walked out of match and returned to America. Van Nuys
Van Nuys ( ) is a neighborhood in the central San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California. USA National Speedway Team
The United States national speedway team are an international motorcycle speedway team governed by the American Motorcyclist Association. They compete in the major international speedway competitions, including the Speedway World Cup and Speedway of Nations and the former events the Speedway World Team Cup and the Speedway World Pairs Championship. Odsal Stadium (known as Bartercard Odsal Stadium for sponsorship reasons) is a multi-purpose stadium, multipurpose stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. The 2006 Speedway World Cup (SWC) was the 6th FIM Speedway World Cup season. The Final took place on 22 July 2006 in the Smallmead Stadium in Reading, Berkshire, England. The tournament was won by Denmark (45 pts) and they beat Sweden (37 pts), host team Great Britain (36 pts) and Australia (35 pts) in the Final. Speedway Grand Prix
Speedway Grand Prix are a series of stand-alone motorcycle speedway events over the course of a season used to determine the Speedway World Champion. The series started in 1995 replacing the previous format of a single event final. The first winner was Hans Nielsen of Denmark. Event format The format for a Grand Prix changed for the 2007 season onwards. Sixteen riders take part in each Grand Prix and over the course of twenty heats each rider will race against every other rider once. The top eight scorers advance to a semi-final and from each semi-final the 1st and 2nd placed riders will advance to the GP final. In this format all rides counted towards Grand Prix points totals, including the semi-final and final, the maximum points for a single GP is 21 (5x heat wins, semi final win and final win). 1987 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1987 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 42nd edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. It was contested for the one and only time over two days in the Netherlands. The scores from both meetings were combined to produce the eventual winner. With the chances of a surprise winner reduced due to two races being held it was the favourite Hans Nielsen that duly obliged with his second World crown. Nielsen had trailed after day one by 1 point to great rival Erik Gundersen and the American Sam Ermolenko. However, in trademark style Nielsen produced a 15-point maximum on day two to wrap up the World Title, with Gundersen claiming silver and Ermolenko bronze. 1985 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1985 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 40th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. Odsal Stadium, the new home of international speedway in England after the demise of the Wembley Stadium and White City Stadium tracks, was chosen by the FIM to host the 1985 Final on 31 August 1985; the first time that the final had been held in England at a venue other than Wembley. A crowd of around 30,000 attended the 1985 Final, which was won by defending champion Erik Gundersen from fellow Dane Hans Nielsen and surprise third placing Sam Ermolenko of the United States. All three riders finished the meeting on 13 points and were forced into a run-off to decide the podium placings. Knockout Cup (speedway)
Knockout Cup (sometimes referred to as the KO Cup) is a type of British motorcycle speedway competition, examples of which have run annually since 1929. Each tier of British Speedway has its own respective Knockout Cup. The current Knockout Cup competitions are the SGB Premiership Knockout Cup (tier one), the SGB Championship Knockout Cup (tier two) and the National League Knockout Cup (tier three). The cups were run in the past under the associated name of the League at the time.
