John Burroughs
John Burroughs (April 3, 1837 – March 29, 1921) was an American naturalist and nature essayist, active in the conservation movement in the United States. The first of his essay collections was ''Wake-Robin'' in 1871. In the words of his biographer Edward Renehan, Burroughs' special identity was less that of a scientific naturalist than that of "a literary naturalist with a duty to record his own unique perceptions of the natural world." The result was a body of work whose resonance with the tone of its cultural moment explains both its popularity at that time, and its relative obscurity since. Sir John Borough, sometimes Burroughs (died 21 October 1643) was the Garter Principal King of Arms 1633-43. Life He was grandson of William Borough, of Sandwich, Kent, by the daughter of Basil Gosall, of Nieuwkerk, Brabant, and son of John Borough, of Sandwich, by his wife, daughter of Robert Denne, of Dennehill, Kent. He received a classical education, and afterwards studied law at Gray's Inn. In 1622, he was at Venice, and from that city he addressed several letters to Robert Cotton, chiefly about the purchase of manuscripts, subscribing himself 'Your faithful servant and poore kinsman'. John Burroughs (April 7, 1907May 21, 1978) was an American politician, educator, and businessman who served as the 18th governor of New Mexico. Burroughs, a Democrat, served one-term and is remembered for honest government and introduction of the concept of a state Personnel Act to improve the quality of state workers and limit somewhat the effect of political patronage. John Coleman Burroughs (February 28, 1913 – February 22, 1979) was an American illustrator known for his illustrations of the works of his father, Edgar Rice Burroughs. Life Burroughs was born in Chicago, the son of Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan, and of his first wife, Emma Centennia Hulbert. When he was six, the family moved to California and settled on the estate they renamed Tarzana. John briefly attended Page Military Academy but couldn't adjust to the strict regimen and was removed in midyear and tutored at home (he had contracted a mild case of polio, and his parents were worried about his being exposed to the disease in public schools). He later attended the Los Angeles Coaching School, Urban Military Academy, and Van Nuys High School, where he wrote and illustrated stories, graduating in 1930. John Burroughs High School is a public high school located in Burbank, in Los Angeles County, California. It is known for its notable alumni, and being the filming location for many television shows. History The building was built in the 1920s but was not established as a high school until 1948. The school is named after the American naturalist John Burroughs.
