Johannes Cornelis Van Rooy
Johannes Cornelis (Joon) van Rooy (9 July 1890 — 19 August 1954) was Rector of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and Chairman of the Afrikaner Broederbond. Roots Van Rooy was born in Steynsburg in the North Eastern Cape. His parents were Henri Charles van Rooy and Hester Hendriena Coetsee. He married Rachel Aletta Lion Cachet, daughter of Jan Lion Cachet and Martha Sophia Viljoen. The Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (abbreviated as PU for CHE) was a South African university located in Potchefstroom. Instruction was mainly in Afrikaans. In 2004, the university was merged with other institutions to create the North-West University. History Founded Potchefstroom University developed out of the Theological School of the Reformed Churches in South Africa ('' Gereformeerde Kerke in Suid-Afrika'' in Afrikaans, abbreviated as ''GKSA''), which was founded on 29 November 1869 in Burgersdorp, Cape Province. At the founding meeting, it was decided that education would also be offered to prospective teachers and to persons without any particular profession in mind. Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape ( ; ) is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, and its largest city is Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Ferdinand Postma
Ferdinand Postma was the first rector of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Personal life Postma was the second son of Marthinus Postma and Elizabeth Wilhelmina Josina Spiller. He was born on 15 July 1879 in Aliwal North, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. In 1880 the family moved to Burgersdorp. Up till 1890 he went to school in Burgersdorp. In 1890 his father, a pastor moved to Middelburg and Postma attend the Christian school there. He passed standard 10 (grade 12) in 1896 in Burgersdorp. He passed the intermediate exam of the University of Good Hope in Cape Town. After the local war in South Africa he studied with a bursary at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Here he completed his Theological studies. Steynsburg
Steynsburg is a small town in the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality, Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Steynsburg is located on the intersection of the R56 and R390. The town lies south-west of Burgersdorp and north of Hofmeyr. Nico Diederichs
Nicolaas Johannes "Nico" Diederichs, (17 November 1903 – 21 August 1978) served as the third state president of South Africa from 1975 to 1978. Education and career After completing school, he attended Grey University College between 1921 and 1925 where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Dutch & Ethics) and Master of Arts (Philosophy). As an economist, he educated himself overseas at universities in Munich, Cologne, Berlin and Leiden, obtaining a doctorate from the University of Leiden and a D.Litt degree. Resuming a career in South Africa, he became a lecturer and later a professor at the University of the Orange Free State, in Political Science and Philosophy. During the 1930s and 1940s, he became a prominent figure in Afrikaner nationalist circles. He founded the ''Reddingsdaadbond'' organisation to promote the economic wellbeing of Afrikaners.
