Joan Ferraté I Soler
Joan Ferraté i Soler was a Catalan poet, critic and translator. Born 1924 in Reus ( Catalunya), Died 2003 in Barcelona ( Catalunya). He studied classical languages at the University of Barcelona, and lived abroad for a several years, teaching in Cuba and then in Canada at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He served as the literary director of Seix Barral between 1970 and 1973. Ferrate has published widely across many genres: poetry, essays, biography, literary criticism. As a translator, he is best known for his translations of classical Greek poetry and of the complete poems of Cavafy Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis ( ; 29 April ( OS 17 April), 1863 – 29 April 1933), known, especially in English, as Constantine P. Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis ( ; 29 April ( OS 17 April), 1863 – 29 April 1933), known, especially in English, as Constantine P. Cavafy and often published as C. P. Cavafy (), was a Greek poet, journalist, and civil servant from Alexandria. A major figure of modern Greek literature, he is sometimes considered the most distinguished Greek poet of the 20th century. His works and consciously individual style earned him a place among the most important contributors not only to Greek poetry, but to Western poetry as a whole. Cavafy's poetic canon consists of 154 poems, while dozens more that remained incomplete or in sketch form weren't published until much later. He consistently refused to publish his work in books, preferring to share it through local newspapers and magazines, or even print it himself and give it away to anyone who might be interested. Gabriel Ferrater i Soler (; 20 May 1922 – 27 April 1972) was an author, translator and scholar of linguistics of the sixties who wrote in Catalan language. His poetical work is one of the most important among the authors of post-war Catalonia and he continues to exert a great deal of influence over authors nowadays. He published three collections of poems: ''Da nuces pueris'' (1960), ''Menja't una cama'' ("Eat a leg", 1962) and ''Teoria dels cossos'' ("Theory of bodies"), consequently compiled into a single volume called ''Les dones i els dies'' ("Women and days", 1968), which was a milestone in Catalan literature.
