Jim Weaver McKown Barnes (born December 22, 1933) is an American writer who was born near Summerfield, Oklahoma (in LeFlore County). He received his BA from Southeastern State University and his MA and Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas. He taught at Truman State University from 1970 to 2003, where he was Professor of Comparative Literature and Writer-in-Residence. After retiring from Truman State, he was Distinguished Professor of English and Creative Writing at Brigham Young University until 2006. On January 15, 2009, Barnes was named Oklahoma Poet Laureate for 2009–2010. He describes his ancestry as "an eighth Choctaw" and "a quarter Welsh". James Antonio Barnes (born April 27, 1944) is an American serial killer who attacked five prostitutes around Memphis, Tennessee from August to November 1988, killing three and wounding two others in what he claimed to be orders from his other personalities. Although considered a suspect in a total of seven killings, he was only convicted of his confirmed crimes and sentenced to 40 years imprisonment. Early life Little is known about Barnes' early life. Born on April 27, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, he was regularly mistreated by his alcoholic parents, with Barnes claiming that his mother had attempted to miscarry by ingesting a quantity of drugs. Colonel James Stevenson Barnes (1756–1823) was a British Army officer who saw action in the Napoleonic Wars. Military career Barnes was commissioned as an ensign in the 2nd Battalion, 1st (Royal) Regiment of Foot on 11 July 1792. He saw action at the Siege of Toulon in autumn 1793 and at the Siege of Calvi in summer 1794, before taking part in the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland, under the command of Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby, in autumn 1799. He saw action again as part in the Ferrol Expedition, under the command of General Sir James Pulteney, in August 1800 and then took part in the Siege of Alexandria in August 1801. James Phillip Barnes (March 7, 1962 – August 3, 2023) was an American murderer and self-identified serial killer who was executed by the state of Florida for the 1988 rape and murder of Patricia Miller. After converting to Islam and saying that he wanted to clear his conscience, he confessed to the murder in 2005, while already serving a life sentence for the 1997 murder of his wife. In 2012, Barnes was featured in the first episode of Werner Herzog's television series ''On Death Row'', in which he was interviewed by Herzog at Florida State Prison. James Barnes (December 28, 1806 – February 12, 1869) was a railroad executive and a Union Army general in the American Civil War. Early life Barnes was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended the Boston Latin School and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1829, in the same class as Robert E. Lee. However, at age 28 he was older than most West Point cadets upon completion, and placed fifth out of 46 cadets. James Barnes (ca. 1739 – 1819) was a canal and railway engineer in England and twice Mayor of Banbury. Career In May 1786, Barnes was appointed Surveyor of the Works for the Oxford Canal Company at a salary of £50 per annum. His role was to engineer the completion of the Oxford Canal south from Banbury to Oxford which had been designed by Robert Whitworth. His contract was for completion of the canal by the start of 1791, but this was achieved one year early. By 1791 his salary had risen to £200 (). The success of the work with the Oxford Canal Company led an agreement with George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham to survey a route from Braunston to London which resulted in the formation of the Grand Junction Canal.
