Jeremy Clarke (governor)
Jeremiah Clarke (also known as Jeremy Clarke) (1605–1652) was an early colonial settler and President of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Born into a prominent family in England, he was a merchant who came to New England with his wife, Frances Latham, and four stepchildren, settling first at Portsmouth in 1638, but the following year joining William Coddington and others in establishing the town of Newport. Here he held a variety of civic positions until 1648 when Coddington's election as President of the colony was disputed, and Clarke was chosen to serve in that office instead. He was the father of Walter Clarke, another colonial governor of Rhode Island, and also had family connections with several other future governors of the colony. Jeremy John Clarke (9 February 1957 – 21 May 2023) was a British writer. Early life and education Born in Rochford, Essex, he was the eldest of three children of John Lewis Clarke, a bank clerk who later became a car park attendant, and Audrey Clarke (née Brice), a nurse. Clarke attended Buckhurst Hill County High School in Chigwell, where he completed two O-levels. Following a backpacking trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Clarke pursued further education by obtaining A-levels through night school. After being rejected by Hertford College, Oxford, he enrolled at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, to study African studies. Career Clarke began his writing career by reviewing a book on ferret husbandry for a student magazine, which caught the attention of University College London professor Karl Miller. Jeremy Clarke (born 5 February 1962) is a British-born poet. Career Clarke's debut collection, ''Devon Hymns'' (2010), featured artwork by John Berger and Yves Berger. A limited edition chapbook, ''Incidents of Travel'', and ''Common Prayer'' (pamphlet) were published in 2012. His second full collection, ''Spatiamentum'', was published in 2014 (illustrations by Italian artist Paola Volpato). All titles were published by Rufus Books, Toronto. An illustrated booklet, ''Cathedral'', was privately printed in 2017. A third collection, ''Psalms in the Vulgar Tongue'', was published by Wounded Wolf Press (Ankara, Turkey) in 2018. ''Bread of Broken Ground'' was privately printed in 2020. Clarke has collaborated with British sculptor Emily Young on a work in stone for St Pancras Old Church in London. Jeremy Terrell Clark (born September 6, 1983) is a former American football defensive end. He was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He played college football at the Alabama. Clark has also been a member of the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins. College career Clark was a four-year starter at Alabama, Clark registered 85 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 8 TFLs during his collegiate career.
