Jefferson Airplane
Jefferson Airplane was an American Rock music, rock band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1965. One of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock, the group defined the San Francisco Sound and was the first from the San Francisco Bay Area, Bay Area to achieve international commercial success. They headlined the Monterey Pop Festival (1967), Woodstock (1969), Altamont Free Concert (1969), and the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968) in England. Their 1967 breakout album ''Surrealistic Pillow'' was one of the most significant recordings of the Summer of Love. Two songs from that album, "Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane song), Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit (song), White Rabbit", are among ''Rolling Stone''s "500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Herb Greene (photographer)
Herb Greene (April 3, 1942 – March 3, 2025) was an American photographer known for his portraits of musicians and bands from San Francisco's counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s. Many of his images were published by ''Rolling Stone'', by record labels, and in books. Greene's photographed subjects include the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, The Pointer Sisters, Carlos Santana, and Sly Stone. Early life and education Born April 3, 1942, in Indio in Riverside County, California, Greene grew up on his father's pear orchard in Medford, Oregon. His father traveled the West Coast selling fruit. His mother, a homemaker, could draw well, and influenced him to pursue the arts. Jefferson Starship
Jefferson Starship is an American rock band from San Francisco, California, formed in 1974 by a group of musicians including former members of Jefferson Airplane. Between 1974 and 1984, they released eight RIAA certification, gold or Music recording sales certification, platinum-selling studio albums, and one gold-selling compilation. The album ''Red Octopus'' went double-platinum, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200 chart in 1975. The band went through several major changes in personnel and genres through the years while retaining the Jefferson Starship name. The band name was retired in 1984, but it was picked up again in 1992 by a revival of the group led by Paul Kantner, which continued after his death in 2016. John Barbata
John Barbata (April 1, 1945 – May 8, 2024) was an American drummer who was active especially in pop and rock bands in the 1960s and 1970s, both as a band member and as a session drummer. Barbata served as the drummer for The Turtles, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jefferson Airplane (for its final album and tour only), and Jefferson Starship (from 1974 to 1978). Papa John Creach
John Henry Creach (May 28, 1917 – February 22, 1994), better known as Papa John Creach, was an American blues violinist who also played classical, jazz, R&B, pop and acid rock music. Early in his career, he performed as a journeyman musician with Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Stuff Smith, Charlie Christian, Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Nat King Cole and Roy Milton. Following his rediscovery by drummer Joey Covington in 1967, he fronted a variety of bands (including Zulu and Midnight Sun) in addition to playing with Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, Jefferson Starship, the San Francisco All-Stars (1979–1984), Dinosaurs (band), Dinosaurs (1982–1989) and Steve Taylor. Joseph Edward Covington (born Joseph Edward Michno; June 27, 1945 – June 4, 2013) was an American drummer, best known for his involvements with Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. Early life Though best known for his work with Jefferson Airplane, Electric Hot Tuna, and Jefferson Starship, Joey Covington (born Joseph Michno) had a long career starting at age 10 as a self-taught drummer/percussionist, along with becoming an award-winning songwriter and ultimately recording on over 22 albums, of which 16 went gold and platinum. Alexander "Skip" Spence (born Alexander Lee Spence, Jr.; April 18, 1946 – April 16, 1999) was a Canadian-born American singer-songwriter and musician. He was co-founder of Moby Grape, and played guitar with them until 1969. In the same year, he released his only solo album, '' Oar'', and then largely withdrew from the music industry. He had started his career as a guitarist in an early line-up of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and was the drummer on Jefferson Airplane's debut album, ''Jefferson Airplane Takes Off''. Bob Harvey (musician)
Robert Brian Harvey (November 17, 1934 – March 18, 2025) was an American bassist, best known as the original bassist of Jefferson Airplane. Biography and career Harvey was born one of five to Frank and Eleanor Harvey in Burley, Washington and grew up in San Francisco. He was married to Joyce Russell Harvey and had three children. With Jefferson Airplane Harvey joined Jefferson Airplane in 1965 playing acoustic bass. In October 1965, the band felt he was not up to par, and he was replaced by Jack Casady. Other projects Harvey co-founded the bluegrass group the Slippery Rock String Band and he was in The Holy Mackerel, with songwriter Paul Williams who recorded the song "Wildflowers". Signe Toly Anderson ( ; born Signe Toly; September 15, 1941 – January 28, 2016) was an American singer who was one of the founding members of the American rock band Jefferson Airplane. Early life Signe Toly was born in Seattle, Washington on September 15, 1941. Her parents divorced when she was three, and her mother raised her in Portland, Oregon. The Great Society (band)
The Great Society (also known as The Great!! Society!!) was a 1960s San Francisco rock band that existed from 1965 to 1966, and was closely associated with the burgeoning Bay Area acid rock scene. Best known as the original group of model-turned-singer Grace Slick, the initial lineup of the band also featured her then-husband Jerry Slick on drums, his brother Darby Slick on guitar, David Miner on vocals and guitar, Bard DuPont on bass, and Peter van Gelder on flute, bass, and saxophone.
