Jasim Folk Fair
Jasim Folk Fair ( ) is a traditional fair in Faridpur district of Bangladesh. In memory of the folk poet Jasimuddin, it is organized under the supervision of Faridpur District Administration and Jasim Foundation every year at Gobindapur on the banks of the Kumar River in Ambikapur Union of Sadar Upazila of Faridpur District, the poet's birthplace. Usually, this fair is organized on January 1, the birthday of poet Jasim Uddin. The main attractions of the Jasim Folk Fair are poetry recitation, songs, dances, dramas, and folk song competitions. History The first Jasim Mela was held on January 1, 1988, the birth anniversary of Palli Kobi Jasim Uddin, at the initiative of Faridpur Sahitya Parishad. Faridpur Sadar Upazila () is an upazila (sub-district) of Faridpur District in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It contains Faridpur city near the banks of the Padma River. Faridpur District
Faridpur District () is a district in south-central Bangladesh. It is a part of Dhaka Division. It is bounded by the Padma River to the northeast. The district was named for its headquarters, the city of Faridpur, Bangladesh, Faridpur, which itself was named for Baba Farid, Farīd-ud-Dīn Masʿūd, a 13th-century Sufi saint. Jasimuddin
Jasimuddin (; 1 January 1903 – 14 March 1976), popularly called Palli Kabi (), was a Bangladeshi poet, lyricist, composer and writer widely celebrated for his modern ballad sagas in the pastoral mode. Although his full name is Jasim Uddin Mollah, he is known as Jasim Uddin. His '' Nakshi Kanthar Math'' and '' Sojan Badiar Ghat'' are considered among the best lyrical poems in the Bengali language. He is the key figure for the revivals of pastoral literature in Bengal during the 20th century. As a versatile writer, Jasimuddin wrote poems, ballads, songs, dramas, novel, stories, memoirs, travelogues, etc. Born in Faridpur, Jasimuddin was educated at Calcutta University where he also worked as Ramtanu Lahiri assistant research fellow under Dinesh Chandra Sen from 1931 to 1937. Shahabuddin Ahmed (1 February 1930 – 19 March 2022) was a Bangladeshis, Bangladeshi head of state who served as the president of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001, and the Chief Justice of Bangladesh, chief justice of Bangladesh from 1990 to 1995. He previously served as the acting president during 1990–91 when Hussain Muhammad Ershad resigned from the post.
