''January'' is a collaborative studio album by Page McConnell and Trey Anastasio, both members of Phish. It was released on March 10, 2023, through JEMP Records, the band's label. Produced by Bryce Goggin, it is McConnell and Anastasio's second collaborative release after 2020's ''December'', an EP consisting of acoustic re-recordings of past Phish songs. The album is a digital-only release. "Dancing in Midair" was released as a single on March 7, 2023. Background Anastasio said of the recording process: "We just walked into the studio with literally an acoustic guitar and a couple of synthesizers. Songs are mysterious. They sound different. It was limiting, in a great way." Page Samuel McConnell (born May 17, 1963) is an American multi-instrumentalist, most noted for his work as the keyboardist and a songwriter for the band Phish. McConnell joined Phish in 1985, and is the only member of its long-standing quartet lineup to not be an original member of the band. McConnell has been part of a number of other side projects, including leading the electronic jazz fusion band Vida Blue (band), Vida Blue and acting as a session musician for the comedy rock duo Tenacious D. He released his debut solo album, ''Page McConnell (album), Page McConnell,'' in 2007. Background McConnell was born on May 17, 1963, in Philadelphia. Ernest Joseph "Trey" Anastasio III (born September 30, 1964) is an American guitarist, composer, and singer-songwriter best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Phish, which he co-founded in 1983. He is credited by name as composer of 152 Phish original songs, 141 of them as a solo credit, in addition to 41 credits attributed to the band as a whole. In addition to his work with Phish, Anastasio has released 11 solo albums. He has also been part of several side projects; these include the Trey Anastasio Band, Oysterhead, Ghosts of the Forest, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Surrender to the Air. JEMP Records is a record label that was created at the beginning of 2005 by Phish Inc. in Burlington, Vermont, specializing in releases from the band Phish. On December 20, 2005, the label's first release was a 3-CD recording of Phish's performance on December 31, 1995 at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York called '' New Year's Eve 1995 - Live at Madison Square Garden''. The second JEMP Records title was a DVD entitled '' Live in Brooklyn'', which was released on July 11, 2006 in conjunction with Rhino Entertainment (an accompanying soundtrack CD was also released). ''Mercy'' is the twelfth studio album by guitarist and songwriter Trey Anastasio, released on March 11, 2022. It is his first fully acoustic album and was produced by Bryce Goggin and Robert Stevenson. Two songs from this album - "Hey Stranger" and "Mercy" - were re-recorded by Phish for their sixteenth studio album, '' Evolve'', released in July 2024. Background ''Mercy'' is Anastasio's second album recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, after 2020's '' Lonely Trip'', and is seen as a companion to that album. Phish is an American rock band formed in Burlington, Vermont, in 1983. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, all of whom perform vocals, with Anastasio being the primary lead vocalist. The band is known for their musical improvisation and Jam session#Rock, jams during their concert performances and for their devoted fan following. The band was formed by Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman and guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, who were joined by McConnell in 1985. Holdsworth departed the band in 1986, and the lineup has remained stable since.
