Janet Hesketh
Janet May Hesketh (nee Janet May Mackenzie, 23 Dec 1934 – 29 Aug 2018) was a New Zealand women's leader. In 1988 she was awarded the Queen's Service Medal, and in 1996 she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the National Council of Women (NCWNZ). Early life and education Hesketh was born on 23 December 1934 in Hamilton, to Lilian May Harris and electrical engineer Eric Bruce Mackenzie. She attended primary school in Nelson, and then attended Wellington East Girls' College after the family moved to Wellington in 1946. Hesketh graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in geography. Hesketh worked as a geography demonstrator and began studying for a master's degree. She also taught at Otago Girls' High School for a year. Hesketh did not finish her masters degree, passing her work on to others to finish when she had her first child. Queen's Service Medal
The King's Service Medal (created as the Queen's Service Medal in 1975 and renamed in 2024) is a medal awarded by the government of New Zealand to recognise and reward volunteer service to the community and also public service in elected or appointed public office. It was established in 1975 and is related to the Queen's Service Order. The QSM replaced the Imperial Service Medal as an award of New Zealand. On 3 May 2024, the Queen's Service Medal was renamed to the King's Service Medal by Royal Warrant. Recipients of the Queen's Service Medal from 1975 until May 2024 will continue to use the 'QSM' postnominal with recipients of the King's Service Medal from June 2024 using the postnominal 'KSM'. The Fourth World Conference on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace was the name given for a conference convened by the United Nations during 4–15 September 1995 in Beijing, China. At this conference, governments from around the world agreed on a comprehensive plan to achieve global legal equality, known as the Beijing Platform for Action. Background The founding United Nations charter (1945) included a provision for equality between men and women ( chapter III, article 8). The New Zealand Order of Merit () is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system. It was established by royal warrant (document), royal warrant on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II, Monarchy of New Zealand, Queen of New Zealand, "for those persons who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits", to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity. Alison Roxburgh
Dame Alison Mary Roxburgh (née Cameron; 6 September 1934 – 25 January 2020) was a New Zealand women's rights advocate and community leader. Life Roxburgh was born in Dunedin on 6 September 1934, and attended Columba College. She earned a Bachelor of Home Science at the University of Otago in 1955 and then attended Auckland Teachers' College. Roxburgh lectured and conducted research in nutrition at the University of Otago, Middlesex Hospital School of Clinical Research and the Flour Advisory Bureau in London, and at Victoria University of Wellington. From 1990 she was the national president of the National Council of Women of New Zealand. Honours and awards In the 1986 New Year Honours, Roxburgh was appointed a Companion of the Queen's Service Order for public services, and in 1993 she received the New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal.
